Europeans want US companies to label foods that include GM products in them. US govt is making it out like it is the Euro Govt that is putting this in place becuause they want trade barriers in place.

Truth is the European consumers want to know this i think 3/4ths of the consumers want this known.

Now why is it that 2 US companies (Monsanto & Dupont) do not want to disclose this. If there is nothing wrong with GM foods then what is there to fear?

I think they should also be labeled here. I want to know of I am eating GM foods. Like I said if they are not harmful, what is wrong with disclosing this. I want to know what I am eating at least, don't you?

Because people are stupid. You say "genetically modified" and they think the tomatos will turn into little monster and eat them from the inside out.

I don't think it's an outrageous request to know what it is you are eating. I would like to know myself, there are too many fat americans, and there are too many reasons for this. I'm not exactly thin myself and trying to correct that and I think that the food we eat should be more detailed in what it does and does not have in it.

Trying to blame the food for making you fat is like trying to blame the school teacher cause you are dumb. YOU have control over YOUR body, and what YOU put in it, and what type of exercise YOU do to keep YOUR body in shape.

GM food has been around for a long time (late 1800's early 1900's?)... It is basically in anything you eat unless the words "Organic" appear on the label.

Who's blaming the food? You're right, I do have control over what i put into my body. Certain foods however are less healthy and are generally cheaper and more readily available. Thus more people purchase them because not everyone has a free ride, some of us don't have the luxury of eating a perfectly healthy diet that fits within our budget.

I'm simply saying that it would be nice to know what exactly is in the food that we eat. I don't think it's an outstanding request to have more choice of what we put into our bodies. If I see something labeled (completely grain fed) and something just plain labeled, I'm buying the grain fed product, even though it does cost a little more. Why? Because I CHOOSE not to have all the added chemicals and hormones added to my diet, in the area that I live in the polluted air is enough of a health risk, I don't need to have anything else added.

Do I think the food industry is providing garbage? To some degree. I won't eat KFC for instance because I really have no desire to eat meat that comes from mutant featherless beakless chickens. I don't eat most fast food if I can help it because of the unidentifiable meat products they stuff into their food. Once again this is something I CHOOSE. I'm not blaming the food, nor the industry, as a whole. They are out to make money, that's understood, so they will do, and use, anything that will cut down their costs.

I don't think modifying their label to include (uses X chemical additive or blah genetic modification) etc... I know how printing process works, won't cost them a dime more other than paying their marketting/design team to modify the label. WOOOO! Big process there.

Just my two cents.

I agree. Only reason I made this comment is because I was watching that crap news network last night and they honestly had people blaming food because they are fat. Same thing with the people that are sueing McDonalds and other fast food restraunts. Sad thing is that people are winning these lawsuits and making a mockery of the Judicuary system.

I dont mean to be bitter, I am just on a diet Smile

It's rather like the whole fresh salmon / farmed salmon debate.

It's a well known fact that the farmed salmon is of much less quality and has some undesirable byproducts in it.. people have the right to decide which they want to eat. It's simple, really.

That's precisely my point.

However, some lower budget restaurants who put price over quality would think differently.

It's not really fair if you are feeding your clients/customers something that they would normally object to, isn't it?

I think this is a good example of why they don't want the labels. You obviously don't know anything about these chemicals or hormones, but they sound bad, so you don't want to eat them. You have no idea whether there is actually anything bad about them. People who are trying to sell this food, obviously don't want to put labels on it that will automatically make people not want to buy their products, even if said products are perfectly safe and healthy.

I hear ya, it is rediculous. Our judicial system and legal system is already a pale and pathetic sham. (No offense to any law enforcement officers out there, or former ones, this is based off of what I see and hear about on a day to day basis in MY community)

I live in a not so pristine community (coughdamnnearghettocoughcough) that has a plethora of dirtball scumbags wandering the streets openly. My next door neighbor is a p********e who lives with her pimp, who is also a drug dealer. There are various crackheads and vagabonds wandering the streets at all hours of day and night. Dealers openly selling drugs on the street corners while cops drive past or sit in parkin glots next to them. The people that lived below me had a crystal meth lab in the basement of the apartment building and the fumes from their little workshop would waft through the entire building. Calls are made on a daily basis about this variety of social waste material, though nothing is ever done and the police *hang out* with them on frequent occasions.

Where I live the police department has turned into nothing more than traffic cops that go around raising money for the city and state by persecuting the public over menial traffic and parking violations instead of actually doing their primary duty of "Serve and Protect". I have never felt served nor protected by the police, more along the lines of persecuted and abused. I protect myself and my family, because I have to, I wish I could sit back and feel safe in my own city.

The worst part about all of this, is that I live three blocks from the State Capitol.

What's wrong with our local government?

You know... that's kinda true... it does suck. I DO love my apartment though, it's friggin huge, hardwood floors, high ceilings, arched doorways, two stories, 4 bedrooms.... absolutely wonderful apartment. IT's also prety cheap. Why is it cheap? Well.... cause I live in a shit hole neighborhood. This apartment would go for about $1000+ a month if it was two blocks over, but as it is I only pay $360 a month. Good deal, and I'm a big boy and can take care of myself Smile

Quirky neighborhood huh. Yeah, my apartment is wonderful. Got 4 PC's networked feeding off a cablemodem and all kinds of technical wonderness... all stuck in... ghettofabalousness. Sometimes I lay awake at night and wish that the rednex and thugz would uprise and take each other out, just leaving good decent folk. Okay, maybe not... I just wish the ploice would do their jobs and clear out these scumbags. Though I'm sure if they did.... my rent would go up <ponders>

you guys are dumb

I saw this shit on the news a while back on corn.

scientests altered corn to make some kind of parasite not eat it, thus there is much more of it around now....since bug didnt eat it.

The catch is, this corn polinated non altered corn so now it's all through the system even in peoples corn who thinks their corn is all natural.

It looks the same, tastes the same, everything.....the only difference is this one bug wont eat it anymore at all.....im not a genetic engineer, i dunno why.

The only way to tell the difference is to look at the corns dna

Chances are, if you've eaten corn, you've eaten genetically altered produce.

GM food is a good thing. It'll actually be a healthier way of living when they can cram all the vitamins and minerals people need into one tomato. Or put anti-biotics into the food we eat to ward of disease.

Genetically altered food has nothing to do with hormones or chemicals, its merely changing the protein strains in the DNA, and giving it exta properties that it wouldn't naturally have.

They can also grow produce bigger, denser, and ripier by genetically engineering them, as well as making them undesirable to parasites reducing the need for pesticides which is where a majority of the chemicals in our food come from.
