|
|
|
Things that make WoW fun. Well, more fun than Everquest.
- No Experience loss from death unless you're lazy.
- No hour-long CRs, no CRs at all, really.
- No fails on tradeskills (well, you can fail at mining but you just try again and get your ore); your chance at skilling up is obvious by the color of the recipe; if you start a skill at level 1 and work it as you level you can pretty much always make something useful. Tradeskills also for the most part are logical; you need copper ore to make a copper bracer. You don't need to make 40 stacks of celestial essence for the 200 subcombines needed to make 30 pieces of silk so you can make 3 s****y robes.
- Quest Log keeps track of your quests and how far along you are in them.
- Combat animations actually look like you're attacking the creature instead of the air 6 feet in front of it.
- Soloing is viable, regardless of class, if you don't want to or can't get a group. (Not sure how true this is in the higher end game.) This eliminates the hours of LFG and the need for multiple accounts to bot to do stuff which is the staple of today's EQ game.
- Most mobs' levels are displayed on screen, eliminating the guessing game about "red con" or "blue con" for the most part. In general you can tell just by looking at a mob whether or not you can take it.
- Quests have stories behind them that actually make sense, and the quest text is short enough that it's even worth reading.
- You don't have to run around begging for ports to get places, however travel also isn't instantaneous and has a cost associated with it, so people who can port are still in demand while not screwing those who can't find a port.
- You get experience for exploring. "You discovered The Tower of Azora (55 exp gained)!" Also quests direct you to new places you might never have found on your own.
- The big regional map = own, gets filled in as you explore new places, kind of like the map in Zelda.
- Mini map shows you all sorts of cool info, including where all your group members are, at all times (they also appear on the big map). Also, ore or herbs show up on the mini map if you have those skills. Paladin "Sense Undead" shows all undead creatures on the mini map.
- No zoning. Moving from area to area is mostly seamless. If you gate or port you see a loading screen but you don't do that too often.
- Any class can gate once per hour.
- No real downtime, any class can heal or regen mana out of combat without outside help.
- From clicking the icon on my desktop to actually playing the game is normally under 2 minutes.
These are just a few of the things that made me sit back and wonder how EQ has survived as long as it has. Feel free to add more or dispute the ones I've listed, or merely to flame!

Wow, I don't even know where to begin by proving you wrong.First, let's start with every class in WoW having a purpose in a group, unlike DAoC.
I played an Infiltrator in DAoC and had zero use in a group. None, zip, nada. I had to solo to 50 or group with guildmates. In RvR you either roll with a stealther group or solo. Compare that to a Rogue in WoW who has enough utility that he can crowd control the mobs, stealth pull to single out mobs from groups and some pretty sick damage to boot.
Every class has a purpose in WoW and a use with enough utility that you can make due without a specific class. Ever play a druid in EQ before SoL or PoP? I played one up to 55, completly solo because they had zero use in a group. Not so with Druids in WoW, they serve a purpose and can fill the role of a Priest or Cleric in a heart beat if there aren't any around. No warlocks? No problem! Priests and Rogues can crowd control too!
Likewise, remember not being able to raid a certain mob, or xp where you want too because you're missing a certain class? Those days are gone with WoW. No more "needing" a cleric to xp in a group.
Soloing in WoW isn't mindlessly boring and incrediably slow like in DAoC either, it can be productive and it's possible with every class, unlike in DAoC. Login for 20 minutes and solo for a bit, is much more fun in WoW then it ever was in Camelot or EQ.
With the talent system, there isn't really any wrong way to spec or gimp your character, unlike in Dark Ages, where if you spec incorrectly you're gimped for your toons life or until you find an RA stone. Sure there are certain combonations that will be better in certain situations, but you won't be completely useless like if you speced incorrectly in Dark Ages.
Talents also provide you with a way to seperate yourself from others of the same class, without reducing your effectivness. In almost all cases in DAoC, there is only one right way to spec your character, or you can't compete, not so in WoW!
Quests are actually fun and rewarding in WoW! They have stories and lore behind them if you wish to read them, but they aren't so vague that you need a guide in-order to complete them. Not to mention they're rewarding. No more spending 3 hours on a quest to get 5 copper pieces!
Dungeons and instances have been made for crawling, not sitting in one spot pulling mobs. Crawling through a Dungeon is much more fun then sitting on your ass for 12 hours camping the same mobs over and over again. For example: ToV was my favorite "dungeon" in EQ, simply because you had to crawl through it, whereas I despised Sebelis and it's "camp-a-thons".
The same thing applies for DAoC's horrible dungeon design, that promotes parking in one spot and camping the same spawn repeatidly.
Tradeskills: Don't even get me started on DAoC's macro trade skilling. What a complete waste of time to level up a trade skill in Dark Ages only to have it become useless by an exspansion with items that replace what you make.
WoW tradeskills, each and every one of them serves a purpose and has a use and are actually *gasp* fun! Everything from healing potions to exploding sheep, to a mount that is a mechanical Warchicken! You can even make Landmines for christs sake!
PvP is shaping up to be pretty balanced so far, there's some tweaking that needs to be done, but there aren't 29834824928349283 million classes that have to be balanced like in DAoC. Dark ages has been out for what? 4 years now? And RVR is more borked then it ever has been, GG Mythic.
PvP will be rewarded for those who participate and fight honorably (e.g. not ganking newbies, that's bad). PvP is not an afterthought in WoW like it was in EQ (is EQ 2 even shipping with any type of PvP at all??).
Addition of Content: Blizzard is renown for releasing free content for each of it's games. Whether it be new maps, heroes for WC3, or bug fixes with old games (Starcraft and Diablo 2 still get support from Blizzard). They're also very supportive of the community. Does Mythic even provide a forum for DAoC? Do they even listen to their Team Leads?
Each of their games has been very polished and quite free from bugs. What little bugs are released get stomped out quite quickly by the patches that are released often.
Combat is much faster paced in WoW then any MMO I've played (Including PlanetSide, EQ, DAoC, SWG, FFXI, CoH, EVE Online, Lineage 2, and Shadowbane to name a few that I've played). No more hitting A and going AFK because there's nothing left for you to do.
Graphics / Performance: The game runs flawlessly on all my machines, including my laptop, and both desktops. One of which is an aging 1.4 ghz AMD Athlon with a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 and 512 MB's of RAM. WoW runs like a dream.
Sure it's not going to win any awards for best graphical engine or setting a new benchmark. But it looks pretty enough, and performs well enough that you don't care because when it comes to raiding, you won't be stuttering along or chopping and sputtering. No need to turn the graphics down either, the engine is very solid and runs like a dream.
To date, WoW beta has been the most solid MMO I've played, and that's saying a lot when you compare it to games that have been out for years and WoW is still in Beta.
Edit: Holy f**k, thanks for stretching out the forum a*****e.

SB was fun in beta, there were just enough people to keep it interesting and not too many to make it unplayable on 56k
