| Quote: | ATHENS, Greece - A man wearing a brightly colored costume bolted from the crowd and grabbed the leader of the marathon Sunday, about three miles from the finish. The intruder wrestled Vanderlei Lima of Brazil to the curb and into the crowd. Police tackled the intruder and freed Lima.
Lima, whose lead had been slowly shrinking, was able to get back into the race. But he lost several more seconds, and eventually was overtaken by Stefano Baldini of Italy.
The intruder, who police said was from Portugal, was arrested. His name was not immediately available. |

No he wouldn't have. He made a big break and held it for a long time but he was burnt by the time that happened, you could see it. The guys that eventually won were already closing in on him when that happened. It didn't help, but he only lost 10 seconds in that and finished 1 min 17 seconds behind the gold medal and 43 seonds behind the silver. Baldini was looking way stronger than him at that point and he definitely would have passed him, and the American that got second probably would have too. It would have been a little closer if that hadn't happened, but I would bet that the final result would have been the same.
He is claiming the incident cost him the gold and he should get to be the co-champion with Baldini, which is crap if you ask me. If he had finished 5 seconds back he would have a case, but when you give up over a minute on top of what you lost from the drunken j*****s attack it's hard to make a case that you would have won.

Dude, he had a 44 second lead when that happened. It was in the mid 30's about 4 miles before that. You could see on his face that he was in the zone. He was going to win until that fuckhole ran out onto the crowd. He was steadily moving forward and making his lead even larger. He would have won.

De Lima had taken the lead early in the race and maintained a 20-second advantage over the chasing pack until a man appeared from the crowd five miles from the finish.
The man, wearing what appeared to be a kilt, pushed the Brazilian into the spectators lining the roadside. De Lima was freed from the man's grasp and resumed the lead.
However, the pack had already been closing and within five minutes, Baldini had caught and passed De Lima before stretching out his lead. |

While I'm not argueing that he would have won or lost as I did not see the race and am only dealing with personal experience as well as the numbers presented, to say he would have won or would have lost is not possible with all accuracy. Going to a complete stop after being exhausted for esxtended periods of time while running really puts a toll on the body. Many people don't feel the full effects of their activities until they come to a hault. I'm sure his heart rate went to high hell and back. His breathing pace probably changed and he was shaken emotionally. At the same time it is reported that the pack was closing in on him. Unless he had something saved or was a strong mental runner ( which most are at this level ) than there is more than a small chance they would have overtaken him. The truth is he will look back and this and wonder. There is no certainty, except that this radical should never be allowed to see another sporting event in his life.

This guy is a certified nut, apparently not the first time he did something crazy.
| Quote: | Athens police sources identified the intruder as Cornelius Horan, who has been barred from practicing as a priest for the past decade. He once published a book called "A glorious new world very soon to come" that predicted the world would soon end.
The attacker Sunday night had a piece of paper attached to his back bearing the message: "The Grand Prix Priest Israel Fulfillment of Prophecy Says the Bible."
In July 2003, Horan, in a costume similar to Sunday's, ran onto the track at the British Grand Prix in the middle of the race and stayed there for more than 20 seconds, forcing Formula One racers traveling at more than 200 mph to swerve around him. He was carrying a sign that said: "Read the Bible the Bible is always right." |
I don't doubt that it would throw you off your concentration and take more than 10 seconds off your time, but just based on the fact that he had given up 15 seconds in the last mile and only had a 20 second lead with three miles to go it would be pretty hard to say it definitely cost him the race. From what I saw, he looked like he was fading and he had been running alone most of the race while the #2 and #3 guy had been taking turns drafting behind each other. Baldini looked like he had a lot left in him and really poured it on at the end. He dropped the american that had been running with him and I would be suprised if he hadn't passed the Brazilian as well, but as was said, you never know.
I guess they gave him some kind of special sportsmanship medal to make up for it.

A lot of posts talking about how it couldn't have cost him more than a few seconds. How can you be a know-it-all about something you clearly have no experience in?

I agree with Occulis on this one. I doubt even the runner knows beyond a reasonable doubt whether it cost him the race.

The guy got a suspended 12 month jail sentence and 3,000 euro fine. Pretty lame. He should have gotten 12 months in a pound-you-in-the-ass Greek prison.

No one can say if he could have won or not. The thing is..they should have restarted the race all over cause he was in a respectable position. And bs events like that make the game slook worse and worse each time.

Oh yeah that's great...
Sorry guys, that 21 miles you just ran means jack shit... please start again right now... no I don't give a shit how your body feels, just do it or quit. No we can't reschedule it, the schedule is full, this road is needed for the b******k 2004 celebration!
Basically what this says is that starting over is a s****y idea... the guy should have gotten a much nastier sentence/fine. Plus the runner should sue him.
