I'm quite happy with my 20D, and the new L series zoom lens i got (70-200mm).

But, here comes the questions.
My parents are celebrating their 30something marriage anniversary and thier birthdays and tehy want me to take pictures.
Now it's going to be in a semi dark lit ballroom. mostly fluerescent (sp) tubes and low ambient light.

The only lens i have for pictures of that nature is the 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera.

What lens would you recommond for pictures like that?
Plus, i might do with getting a good flash for situations like that (unlike the built in one that sux).
Again, what woudl you guys recommend for a good flash for low light situations (this, disco/clubs etc) that makes pictures not look like white light explosions Razz

Thanks in advance!

you will want to get whatever flash is recommended for your 20D or whatever flashes are listed as compatible. It might not be the same one I have for my 1D's. (550EX)
So.... check your manual or google flashes for canon.

I dont know what kind of sensor you have, some do better than others in low light. If your lens is 2.8 at least, you can up the ISO pretty high and see how that goes. But I would really recommend what I said above especially if you want the kind of quality that I suspect your parents are looking for......like seeing their faces in the right color instead of a ton of digital noise and fuzzy shadow. Your 20D has excellent high ISO capabilities and should easily handle up to 1200 with very little noticable noise. Which version of the 70 - 200 do you have?

Don't use the built in flash with the 70 - 200 as it's long enough to block part of the flash and give you ugly shadowing. If at all possible don't use the built in flash at all, instead look to a 580 or 550ex. If it's in a place with low ceilings look to bounce the flash and use a diffuser like the omnibounce or lightsphere.

If you are worried about the mixed lighting (Tungsten + Flash + available) shoot raw and either shoot a custom white balance from a grey card or set the white balance in conversion later via photoshop.

If you haven't used flash before, practice beforehand in as close to those conditions as you can. Worst case, put the Camera on P for full automation as it will give you much better results than manual if you don't know how to work with a flash.

Check out www.fredmiranda.com and www.photography-on-the.net both are excellent resources.

P.S Freyha give me your 1D. I hate my 10D so much I've gone back shooting slides again Smile

i ahve teh 2.8 non IS 70-200 mm

I def noticed the flash "shade" with that lens which is why i am looking for a good external flash.
For what i want to start doing i will be in low light or "mixed" light a lot.
Either indoor for this sort of birthday kinda thing, but also lots of clubs to take pictures of dancers/dj's etc.

More then likely i'll be doing model shots soon but those will be possible for me to control the light and such.

I'm still somewhat of an amateur, so could you recommend a good website to read up on the differences between omnibounce/lightsphere etc..

Thanks for all the tips btw!

PS: and yeah i was planning on shooting the whole affair in RAW just to be on the safe side and fiddle with lighting later

Stofen is designed to bounce the flash. Check http://www.stofen.com/

The lightsphere II is a difuser and can be used for direct flash. Check http://secure.mycart.net/catalogs/index.asp?catid=13406&fileID=4917 or google for Gary Fong.

You might also want to look at the Lumiquest mini softboxes at http://www.lumiquest.com/

Keep in mind with any of those products you are going to be looking at 1 - 3 stops of light loss so if you are using the flash in manual be sure to adjust accordingly.

Both the sites I mentioned in my previous post have lighting forums, scanning through the existing posts and archives should give you a ton of information on the omnibounce, lightsphere and mini softbox.

A flash 'shade' do you mean part of the picture was dark or black? (top half or bottom half) If so, that can happen if you are shooting with a shutter speed faster than the flash can sync with.

and you have my workhorse lens, its the bomb for just about everything I do, but in tighter quarters indoors with a flash, I use my 28-105 lens alot.
