I've installed video cards, modems, changed ram etc. I needed a new pc and decided i'd like to put it together myself. I looked at quite a few sites on the internet and it seems pretty straightforward. Anyone with experience have any insight that might be of use?

p.s. don't recommend hardware like m.b. / cpu etc please, I already bought it.

The only difficult part in the entire process is correctly applying thermal paste to your CPU and correctly attaching the heat sink so the pressure is even across the entire face of the CPU for optimal heat dissipation.

Beyond that, it's all child's play.

If you already bought the components there's not much else to it; just hook everything up and go. Just don't get a crummy case - a well-designed case (swing out bays, no sharp edges to cut yourself on, enough room to work, decent paths for routing cables etc) makes things a lot easier.

Pretty much the only hard thing I can think of is scraping the chewing gum stuff off the top of the CPU if you're going to use thermal compound. And sometimes putting on the heat sink can require a lot of force. edit: like Jinu said.

Also, make sure you plug the right fans into the right fan headers, or it might not boot; they're not interchangeable. It should say which one is for the cpu fan, and which ones are for case fans.

It's too bad you already bought the shit. It used to be cheaper to build your own PC. Nowadays it's cheaper to buy one off the shelf or even a custom built system. The bonus is of course the warantee on such a product and/or upgrade options.

They're cheap because they use the cheapo parts. They don't advertise the substandard FSB, RAM CL, Power Supply, HDD RPM...

I forgot to put a MB on risers once and fried the whole computer. Good thing I was able to return everything.

Bingo. If you want some PoS from gateway you won't be able to build it cheaper than you can buy it. If you want a real high end game computer you will do much better putting it together yourself in most cases.

Only hard part is putting the heat sink on the processor. After that it's just plugging in a bunch of connectors and you're done.

depending on the processer even that is easy, i never had trouble removing or replacing the hs on my athlon xp skta board.

Even a low end non gaming system is better if you build it, the low end systems people put together for like 700 bucks are really nice.. much better than anything you can get from the oem manufacturers.

Dropped 450 on my upgrade... went to a XP 2700+, 120 gig HDD, 512 DDR, new case, new mobo, and new vid card... runs like a champ

I didn't know a FSB was a component.
