How do you set up job interviews for an 8-5 company when you already have an 8-5 job and no vacation? I mean I know a lot of people just call in sick, but assuming you don't want to lie, is there like an "appropriate" method for dealing with this? Is it ok to ask the new company for an interview late in the day or on a Saturday or something? You don't want to seem uncooperative, but at the same time I would think that they might see it as a positive that you are loyal to your current employer and that you don't want to lie to them in order to go to an interview. This isn't a professional job, but it is in an office environment if that makes a difference as far as etiquette goes.
This isn't for me it's a friend that has this problem, but I am not a frequent job changer so I don't know if there's a standard approved way of handling this and I know that there are some people here that switch jobs a lot.

I pretended my niece was in a fight and I had to go talk to the principal. That was sort of retarded because then the next day I had a whole stupid story about "how it went." I'd imagine the company you're interviewing with would be willing to do the interview outside normal hours, especially if your old company is in the same market. Hiring experienced people away from your competitor is a double win for the company - the company hiring you has less training to do (compared to some noob out of college) and the company you leave has to find someone to replace you.

Just call in sick or ask the other company if they can interview late in the day and just leave early.
f**k 'em, if you want to leave you don't owe them anything.

Nobody ever tried to make an interview without getting "sick" or having a fake doctor's appointment or something?

Is it possible to set it up for a lunch break?
I have done that before. Told my boss I needed to take a long lunch to take care of something and that it is possible that it might run over. If they ask what, then you just tell them it is personal business and leave it at that.

My last interview was 3-4 hours on the phone, 7 in person, 7 "offline" with tests and such I did at home. Hard to squeeze all that into a lunch break. I just asked for a day off.

The one I did on lunch was about 2 hours long.
My last one was about 45 minutes. The guy who hired me looked at my resume and talked to me about the job for around 15 minutes. The rest was spent bulshitting about golf and sports in general. I a pretty sure I had the job about 5 minutes in. I was way over qualified.

You guys are low-ballin it. To me, if I'm not thinking, "Haha whoah I wonder if I can do this shit!" then the job just isn't worth it.

I actually get to do that at my current job. I spent half of my time thiss week in meetings with my divisions Sr. management discussing ways to improve alot of things. They really are giving me alot of free reign over things no one in my position should have access to.
I get to spend tons of time asking myself, "I wonder if I can do that?" and they are letting me try.
This is fun. Taking a redneck run trucking company to a new level in technology.

That's a good idea Venkman. Hadn't occured to me but it should have since part of our interviews here is to go out to lunch with the candidate hehe. And yeah interviews here are an all-day thing but what I'm talking about is not a professional job so I wouldn't think an interview would be much more than an hour or so max.

Not really that unusual, although I've never heard of spending so much time on the phone. My interview for the job I have now I showed up at 8AM and was here until 4 or so. Spent an hour with about 6 different interviewers and went out to lunch with 3 others. I'm just an engineer.

Dev job @ a game company. Their CTO has really high standards and I think me having all my experience but no degree made him curious / doubtful. Who's to say? I got the job.

The longest interview I have ever had was a two hour long interview with three executives. I interviewed for an account manager job with Foster Grant. I would have been handling the frames they sell to Wal-Marts optical labs. In the end I lost the job to someone that had a little more experience then I did. We both had impressive retail experience, but he had optical experience where I didn't.

They didn't tell me who I lost it to, but why I lost it to another person. It also helps that I know a person that works there..

My job went like this.
Went to the shop and they gave me my tax forms and my job application at the same time.
Been working there for like 4 or 5 months.
