Hi, I'm kind of still learning the ropes here, so please bear with me, OK?
I'm being told that I really need to get a sub job before doing the quest for the advanced job, or otherwise I'll s***w my toon up, is that right? Also, where exactly do I get the sub job quest thingy?

The information you good is not a 100% true, but nevertheless it's still good advice (and common sense).
You can get your sub job by performing a quest for either Isacio in Selbina, or Vera in Mhaura. Note that you can't do both. Not also that the quest in Selbina is noticeably easier to finish, so make of that what you will.
