I was having an ICQ convo with an old online buddy and we started talking about good Fantasy books and I was wanting to find out what you all have been reading lately.. which are your all time favorites ... Just feel free to discuss anything about Fantasy books here
I recently finished the "Coldfire Triology" by CS Freidman and I thought they were VERY well done and I think his "Anti-Hero" was written so much better than the most famous anti-hero in Fantasy (Elric). Dark Sun Rising is the first book of this series btw...
Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series .. I read the most recent book and even though I FORCED myself through it, I burned it after... RJ NEEDS to come up with some new shit or just stop the series .. the past like 7 books have been BARELY readable and stale as f**k ...
Terry Goodkind and the Sword of Truth series.. The last book was a TAD preachy.. but I agreed with what he was saying so It didn't bother me TOO much ... I liked seeing TG going back to his roots, so-to-speak using Khalan, Cara and Richard as the main characters again ...The next book looks to be VERY promising though ...

I'm going to have to mention The Dreamthief's Daughter, the newest book (that I'm aware of) by Michael Moorcock that brings together (arguably) his two most popular characters in Elric and the latest in the Von Beck line. It's a rather odd and slow going book but if anybody does stick with it it reaps rewards quite nicely.
Other than that...well I suck, I've been spending way too much time playing videogames and watching movies than I have reading although I enjoyed most of the Vampire the Masquerade clan novels when I read those a little while back and -really- loved the Games Workshop publication called "Storm of Iron" a book that I liked so much it got me to start playing the tabletop game again, then again I always was a sucker for seeing the bad guys win!

Omgozzle we agree on something. The world is ending.
Some of Clive Barker's books classify as fantasy... sorta. Weaveworld, the great and secret show... well... nm those are more phantasmagoria.
R.A. Salvatore used to be my favorite, but after rereading some of the books they really blow. Like... really. Thank god 3 or 4 of them are still as pristine as I remember them. He's still awesome but, I dunno. Maybe WotC or some other publisher stole his soul.
Abi if yo'ure into fantasy books, I can link you to the 1 I'm workin on. It's rather swank!

I've been reading the Warhammer 40k novels...Gaunt's Ghost, Xenos, etc...
I'm still a huge fan of the Horseclan Odysseys by Robert Adams, also the Amber series by Zelazny.

Just about anything written by douglas niles or ed greenwood is good.
Also The old Gary Gygax "Greyhawk" books are pretty good.

If you are looking for a good series to start up check out the Riftwar saga by David Eddings... First book of the series id Magician: Apprentice. This series is one of my faves hands down...
Another good series from I believe Robert Silverburg (been a while) called Guardians of the Flame.... really good series, a bit long but wel worth the read....
Dragon Lance ownz..it's what hooked me into the whole fantasy genre... now THAT would make for some good movies...

It's up there with Tolkein IMO, best stuff out there, makes Jordan look like children's books.

George R. R. Martin.. Series has 3 books out (Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords; A Feast for Crows is the upcoming one).. 4th one is a year late already tho. I don't summarize well, I couldn't do them justice. I'll just say they are not your typical formula fantasy series, no character is 'safe' or the 'super hero who saves the day'.

I'm not usually a science fiction person, choosing to stay in the realm of fantasy (I.E. Magicians Apprentice/master are two of my favorite books ever) but a series called Otherland seems to be really good. Thus far in 3/4's the way into the first book (of 3) and its hard to put down.

I agree about David Eddings. I've read The Belgariad, The Mallorean, and the two trilogies he wrote about Sparhawk. I have no idea why I keep reading his work. His writing is good but the story is always so boring. Where's the fun in reading about a group of people that are so ungodly powerful they walk over any challenge place in front of them?
Anyway, good fantasy series...Feist's books (I forget the name of the series), Modesitt's Chaos and Order series, Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. Any of the Dragonlance or Drow books are passable I guess. They weren't very challenging in my opinion but still worth reading once. The Legend of Huma may be the sole exception to that.
If you want to read about an anti-hero, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is a good series. Both trilogies are worth reading in fact. As a word of warning, the first trilogy is a bit of a rip off of Tolkien but still enjoyable. I can't remember the author at the moment.
Anyway, that's the best I can come up with off the top of my head. I've got an entire bookcase full of fantasy books. PM me if you want and I can send you some more when I get home.

ya, fantasy authors have a hard time not making their main characters retardly powerful.. when they start owning gods in 2 swings you know the series is finished.. thats one thing tolkien did right, you never got the sense that any of the protaganists was all that powerful compared to the evil people.

Never read any fantasy novels until last week. Picked up some book "dragonwing" that I found laying around here. I went trough it in 5 days, and started some series called Dragonlance this saturday, and it rocks. Easy reading, and quite amusing =)

Dragonlance is what turned me on to fantasy... Was around 8th grade an it jus caught on like fire since... most of the DL series books are easy reads and have good stories....
Riftwar saga went =
Magician: Apprentice
Magiacian : Master
Silverthorn
Darkness at Sethanon
Serpentwar saga= (after riftwar)
Shadows of a Dark Queen
Rise of a Merchant Prince
Rage of a Demon King
Shards of a Broken Crown
Riftwar Legacy= (happens between some of the riftwar books prequalish)
Krondor: The Betrayal
Krondor: The Assassins
Krondor: Tears of the Gods
Krondor: The Crawler
Krondor: The Dark Mage
There's some other books too I dun remember where they fit in...
Prince of the Blood
The Kings Buccaneer
Faerie Take
think these 3 are before the serpent war saga... been a while
