So, as far as I understand it, if you choose to play a Tech you're going to become the best item crafter in the game, right? (Not counting other Techs, I mean.) Does that mean that no player from another Faction will ever be able to challenge your "crafting supremacy"? Or merely that you have the most advantageous position in the beginning, but anyone can get there over time?

Well, yes and now, I think. As far as I know, most trade skills are not unique to the Tech faction (though I might be wrong). That means anyone can select them and develop them as he progresses in level. However, tradeskills are a tech's favored skills, so he's innately better at them then other, non-tech characters, so it's easier for him to develop them.
