This might be better answered by some of the women here, but does anyone use fake tanning stuff? I'm pretty fair skinned and I'd rather be white than have the orange look going, so is there anything that looks moderately real besides attempting to lay out? I either burn or I stay the same when I do that. Thanks in advance :p

I've worked in a family owned tanning salon since 1990...I always suggest avoiding the fake tan stuff. I've yet to see any that gives you a nice brown look, other than getting an airbrush done. Which is what bodybuilders and models get done before going to a show. Really spendy, doesnt last long.
The fake tan stuff you'd buy at any random store WILL turn you orange, and be very, very streaky, no matter how careful you are when you put it on. You'll start to sweat later and that'll wash off part of the bronzers causing streaks as well. Definatly avoid that new spray on mist tanning beds they have out as well. I had one girl come in our store crying because she had just used it. Doesn't go on even, her hands, face and toes were neon orange and it lasts for 3 weeks.

juat go outside during daytime hours 20 to 30 mins every day. go for a walk or whatever. it wont kill you, really.
if you do use a fake tan stuff get a bronzer they tend to be less orange on my sister (she gets freckles so refuses to tan) just make sure you loafa in the shower before putting it on as the dry dead skin areas tend to get a flakey crusty orange look to them if you dont *the elbows are bad for that*.
seriously though.. get a bit of sun each day just to take the pasties away, ya dont have to tan until ya look like beef jerky.

Yeah. I do 2-3 hours every Sunday and I have a major farmers tan. Need to take my shirt off and lay out or something.

I do go outside pretty much every day, I'm not a hermit :p The problem is I either burn in that 30 minutes I may be outside or I get nada. My arms are a little tan, but only after years of being in the sun daily.

Tanning beds bro.
Theres 2 different types of places you can go.
1: The overly expensive place that specializes in tanning. Here you will find alot of different beds and nice service, yet you will pay up to 25$ a visit.
or
2: Try to find a normal salon. Alot of salons have a tanning bed in the back or somewhere around the shop. Usually only 1 or 2 but they don't specialize in them so its probably not going to be too busy or expensive for that matter. The one me and my girlfriend have found have a deal. You pay 30$ a month and have unlimited access to it, so long as you use it in 24hour intervals. If you know any high-class women, they can probably tell you where one of these salons are.
As for the burning problem, just dont stay in for more than 15 minutes at a time. And before you go in, use some normal lotion. After you get out wait an hour, take a shower and put on a little bit more. If you hate lotion like me im right there with you, but if you dont wanna put up with a slowly agonizing pain from sunburn for weeks then trust me, and use the lotion.
Hope that suggestion helps

Hey Ash, there is a new technique that i read about and saw on television that has you standing in a small room while you get a full body tan sprayed on. Alot of the Hollywood stars use this technique and love it. Just another option.

If you go to a salon, ask them how often they change their bulbs. Should be at least twice a year. If you go to a place where the tanning bulbs havent been changed recently, you're paying for nothing.
Overly expensive places are just that, overly expensive. The state sets the max time you're allowed to tan in a bed depending on the bulb strength. So if you find a place that wants $25 for a 15 minute tanning bed, then another place that wants $7 for a 15min tanning bed, assuming both are changing their bulbs when they should, the only difference is the price.
Anywhere you go is going to try to sell you lotions, while they do help, avoid anything with a bronzer in it. If you want fast color use something stronger, which would be called a tingle factor or heat activated lotion. Dont use those if you burn easy.

As someone who's spent all but the past year or so 100% casper or crisped, I can offer up a little advice, or what finaly got me tan.
Low intensity long duration daily time in a sunish enviroment. Basicly driving around in a van all day, where the sun shown through the windows and hit my arms, they tanned over a long ass period of time (3-4 months) Before this, I'd either burn or not tan at all. It's not like I never went outside at all either, I'd spend maybe 2-3 hours a day off and on outside, more when I was younger, and still, nothing. Go to the beach, and be fried to fek, or just not tan at all depending on sunscreen usage.
But that daily 4-5 hours of indirect/difused sunlight did the trick eventualy

I tan pretty good naturally, but did decide to use a salon a few times before a Caribbean cruise over winter break years ago. Frankly, I think they're a ripoff. I went from a reddish color (especially in the face, leaving me with racoon eyes) to no tan at all a few days later after my last visit. I guess maybe if I kept going and going my tan would've worked out, but damn who wants to bother? Salon = pain in the ass.
Just get some real sun, small intervals if you have to.

heeh your not the only one ash =)
I am very fair skinned and i do not tan atall well in the sunshine =/
Anyways i hear there bringing out some little thing they can stick on you somewhere, like tiny, and it makes you get tons of melanin (skin pigment) all over your skin... giving you a great tan and also protecting you from cancer at the same time!
Heeh maybe one day!
As for fake tan lotions.. just dont go there =P I personally would not waste your time/ money on a sun bed either... its really not a very healthy thing to do no matter how much you want tanned

I get my her did at an Aveda concept salon. They also offer the spray on tan. I think that the spray on is more of a 'special day' type of deal. It will run you about $30 per session and will last up to a week. However, when it starts fading, it flakes off and leaves your skin with a rash-look. I haven't tried it myself but a few friends have. I wouldn't suggest it unless you need a quick tan for a special occassion.
I'm outside a lot during the summer. I do have a dermatologist that yells at me everytime I see her about tanning so I try to avoid her when it's nice outside! I'd suggest either a tanning booth or if you're going to lay out I've concocted a mad scientist forumla for a beautiful tan. Get a waterproof SPF 30 lotion and rub it all over if you're concerned about skin cancer. Then you'll need a bottle of baby oil and a small bottle of iodine. Pour 1/4th of the baby oil out onto the grass (so you don't clog your pipes in the house) and add a few drops of the iodine to the baby oil until it turns a reddish/brownish color. Put the lid back on the baby oil and shake it violently as if it were a screaming kid in a grocery store. The iodine will stain your skin and the baby oil will attract the light, just as if you were swimming in water but better. I wouldn't recommend putting this on your face. Although, I would say keep the SPF on your face, it's usually the first area to burn.

I have tanned in beds since 1987, most of the time, it was 3x a week. Since moving to AR, I found a wonderful salon, decent pricing (52.50 bought me 20 sessions, no expiration), and it's clean. It's just too g.d. hot down here to go at this time of year
I agree with Akronn and the others that said the best way to get color is just to sort of go on with life outdoors. You can get an awful lot of color just by doing things outside.
Anyway--
spray on stuff--my friend in NY is an esthetician and one of the services she offers is this airbrushing. While it offers more control to have someone who knows what they are doing spraying you, I have never really been impressed with the results.
beach--if you are pasty, this is the "hardest" way to go. Beach sun burns fast. Using a heavy sunblock, you can start out by limiting your exposure in the beginning and slowly increasing it as time goes on. BUT, this takes time.
beds--the way to go. Find a place that is CLEAN and certified by the ...er, tanning board ..or whatever it is. Do not let them toss you in a bed for the full time limit (7-20 mins, depending on the bed) right away, or even, perhaps, your first week. Start out with a normal 20 minute bed, but only go in for like 10 minutes, maybe even only 8. Increase each time by about one or two minutes if you see you aren't turning red. Save the speed beds for when your body is used to the lights (and when you have a fortune to plunk down--they can cost like 15. bucks a session).
If you are that fair-skinned, you can burn, altho the burn you get "feels" different. It's red, annoying, and itchy.
Don't use accelerators. Waste of money, IMO.
If you are gonna tan areas that have never seen the sun, be aware that those areas will react fast to the beds. First time I tanned, way back, my chest and other areas that had not seen the sun before, colored faster than the rest of my body--red. Itchy. Yuck. After the first few times, it didn't make a difference anymore. My body tanned all at the same rate.

It sucks, I get the racoon eyes effect just from driving in the car daily especially when I wear my sunglasses, but even when I don't! I've just learned to deal with it, sometimes it's more noticeable than others. From what you all seem to be saying, I'm either going to have to tan over a period of years, or remain white.
I'm really considering going for the orange look just to see the difference it makes appearance wise because I plan on going to the beach a lot this summer (last summer I was going 4 days a week, but refused to take off my shirt). As for the tanning beds, I think I would be claustrophobic and freak out. I heard good things and bad things about the spray on booths, so I'm not sure which route to take. Thanks for all your input ^_^

bah, you guys can totally get tanned. You just have to regulate the amount of time you actually sit out in direct sunlight.
I'm a white-ass that can hardly tan, but I've found if I spend the right amount of time each day, it starts to work gradually.
The darker I get the longer I can stay out, and the easier I tan.
TRY IT!!! it works! You guys aren't as white as you think lol..
