I'm playing this again for the hell of it and I noticed one thing that was different. If you acquire Yuffie while Tifa is the leader of the party, in the exchange that preceds her joining your group she yells "Hey, boobs!" at Tifa. This made me laugh, I had never played the game in that sequence. Anyone done this while Cid was party leader? I'm wondering what she says to him now.
Also.. In all these years I had never noticed there's a Chocobo stable on the Highwind - what's the point of this?

Stable's there for a technicality. You take a chocobo on the plane, fly somewhere, land and you'll be on the chocobo. The stable is to show you the chocobo is on board during flight.

There are lots of "coolest" things in FF VII that make it so good. IMHO the best console RPGS of that period were FF VII and FFT, Tactics only slightly edging out FF VII because of the infinite replay value it has.

This is the best walkthrough I've found with pretty much every in and out, spoiler, secret quest, and quirk with f*****g around with your party members at different times.
Word is they make a new FF7 for PS3, which would cause me to buy my first console system since Sega Genesis.

i've heard that if you do everything perfectly right you can get barrett to go out on a date with you ..
.. apparently if you do the negative thing every time one of the chicks is like "lol, do u <3 me" all the way from buying a rose from aeris to fingerbanging tifa .. it gives you a 0 rating with them both and then you go out on a date with barrett
.. i think there is also a way to date yuffi
anyway, reading it made me lol

Have you ever played tactics going through as all one class? Like all thiefs or all monks. On my game now I think I'm level 40 and still have Delita in the party

No, that sounds interesting tho. I can't imagine you can possibly advance very far tho... still, it sounds challenging.

I think last I played it (FFT) I was playing with Ramza the entire game as a Squire, but not with everyone. It's tough stuff, one class for everyone has to be dang near impossible tho.

The Chrono series needs some love in the form of a new game. Both games were awesome. =)

Kefka > Spehiroth
and yes you can go on a date with barret and yuffie, it has to do with what party you keep with you the most ammount of time aswell as the answers you give iirc.

I think FFVII is highly overrated. Whlie it is a great game, both FFVI and FIV are superior. FFVII just happened to be the mainstream introduction to the Final Fantasy series and for many Console RPG's in general. I know plenty of people who have only played FFVII through FFX or a mix thereof.

Yeah Kefka does kind of whip Sephiroth's ass. Kefka actually managed to destroy the world.. no one else ever came that close. I do think the stories FF 2 and 3 (American) were very enjoyable,
I'm not sure I would call FF VII overrated tho... I mean, the majority of the attention is fan-based. Everything from the protests to revive Aeris to the demands for a sequel - those weren't marketing ploys, they were genuine sentiments from the player community, and I don't think even Square anticipated that much attention from it. It was different because in no other FF had a principle character been killed off, (at least that I recall) and I think it galvanized the game's players the way they hadn't been before.

My fondest gaming experience was Final Fantasy 2 (US) followed closely by FF3.

I still personally think FFVII is overated. Much of the fanbase, as I said, has not played the full spectrum of the FF games. I read a number of RPG specific boards which is what drew me to that conclusion as well as people I know who are in that same boat.
IMO, If you go back and play it now (which I do as part of my yearly FF fest), it hasnt aged well compared to the earlier games. FF VI and FFIV still stand the test of time and are fully enjoyable, especially FFIV Hard (f*****g Zeremous is a b***h on hard) even with today's standard of graphics and gameplay.
Again, I agree that it is a great game, but I still believe it to be one of the lower rung Final Fantasy games overall.

Actually those twins sacrificed themselves in FF2/4... they were side characters that were playable, as close as I think it comes really.

Palom and Porom - I was sad when they turned to stone. Also Tellah died for good in FFIV and he was a principle character for the time he was in the game.

I don't really know anything about Kefka .. but to say FF7 is overrated I just can't understand ... what made FF7 good is that Sephiroth is totally badass ... I haven't played all the FF games, but I did play FF7-FF9 and FF7 definitely stood out far above the other 2 simply because of Sephiroth's character
... he's basically this genetically engineered child, born of science to be a soldier experiment ... he wasn't raised as a child would be .. he was raised as an experiment without thought to him as a person ...
... then it ends up that the experiment actually has a mind of its own .. and a perception and power that his creators lack .. and this twisted experiment child decides that it wants to take control .. it starts looking for some connection to a parent since it is basically an orphan .. and it finds both jenova and through her a way to connect himself to the lifestream of the planet and become a god ..
the picture above is how he totally destroyed a town located near an experiment site where other creatures were being experimented on like he was .. showing his absolute lack of faith in and hatred toward humanity..
.. the really interesting part is that in the end when holy is called upon and the planet decides what is best for it, it can be interpreted that the planet agrees with sephiroth and decides to return humanity to the lifestream .. as evident by the final scene where midgar is abandoned and the Red 13 creatures are running around
compared to FF8 and FF9 the depth of sephiroth is just astounding .. the other enemies had absolutely no depth .. but Sephiroth you both could understand and pity .. it really set FF7 apart from 8 and 9 as something you could both play and watch, and it could perhaps even be more interesting watching than playing

Palom and Porom did stone themselves but were resurrected later. You're right about Tellah dying, and he was a principle character. Also Cid in FF2 (American) suicides to seal off the tunnel to the underground which was also sad. Maybe it's because Aeris was a chick, which I hadn't thought about.
I get the impression you don't like it Jak, which is fine, but I still don't see what you're saying that makes it "overrated". If your statement about VII being what brought it into the mainstream market were true all subsequent FF titles would have been hits as big if not bigger. The truth of it tho is that no game with the distant exception of X made a very good impression. If anything the game is underrated. It did better than most people anticipated. Sales alone speak for that, followed by fan attention and followed by the same characters from that game making appearances in other games which incidentally, boosted the popularity of said games. Ergheiz sucked ass big time, but I bet you more than one person bought the s****y game just because Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth were in it. I know I, for one, did.
As for aging well, perhaps the technology behind the original title, did not, but I think that's true for everything older than 3 years ago. (How you think FF2/3 aged well but 7 did not is beyond me, btw.. 2d sprites = archaic). What did age well is the story and the characters. Advent Children is a clear sign of that.
