I here these AO guys take system exploits very seriously, unlike some other MMO people. I'm not a player myself, but I maybe interested in giving it a shot, though some of badmouthing of their banning policy is causing second thoughts. Is there any truth to it? I mean, their flexible definition of what an exploit is, and liberal administration of punishment? Any first hand experience to share?

First hand, not really. However, I'm not sure what you've been hearing, but AO staff has quite a clear policy on exploiting bugs these days. According to the FAQ (found at forums.anarchy-online.com), they define an "exploit" as "a bug that grants the user unnatural or unintended benefits in game", which is clear enough, IMO. I wouldn't pay much attention to game comments coming from people with banned accounts, that's probably too biased to be relevant.
