| Quote: | Girl writes English essay in phone text shorthand
By Auslan Cramb, Scottish Correspondent
(Filed: 03/03/2003)
Education experts warned yesterday of the potentially damaging effect on literacy of mobile phone text messaging after a pupil handed in an essay written in text shorthand.
The 13-year-old girl submitted the essay to a teacher in a state secondary school in the west of Scotland and explained that she found it "easier than standard English".
Her teacher, who asked not to be named, said: "I could not believe what I was seeing. The page was riddled with hieroglyphics, many of which I simply could not translate."
The Scottish Qualifications Authority has expressed concern about the problem in its report on last year's Standard Grade exams, and revealed that "text messaging language was inappropriately used" in the English exam.
Judith Gillespie, of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, said a decline in standards of grammar and written language was partly linked to the craze. "There must be rigorous efforts from all quarters of the education system to stamp out the use of texting as a form of written language so far as English study is concerned.
"There has been a trend in recent years to emphasise spoken English. Pupils think orally and write phonetically. You would be shocked at the numbers of senior secondary pupils who cannot distinguish between their and there. The problem is that there is a feeling in some schools that pupils' freedom of expression should not be inhibited."
Dr Cynthia McVey, a psychology lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, said texting was second nature to a generation of young people. "They don't write letters, so sitting down to write or type an essay is unusual and difficult. They revert to what they feel comfortable with - texting is attractive and uncomplicated."
The teenager's essay began: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kds FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc." Translation: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York, it's a great place." |
Great education system...

That would be thumbs, I use both thumbs when I txt. It's actually not that suprising. Each button has 3 or 4 letters on it and if you use predictable text you press another button to cycle through words.

rofl docter, that says a lot about the education system doesnt it.
I sometimes find myself writing "wanna" and "gonna", for example, for an english text. Which sucks because its all to blame on EQ

Doctor..although not really wanting to stand up for eduin, you made a slight error in judgement.
That girl did NOT learn that in school. She learned that from friends and her phone.
The whole reason this is in the paper is because the SCHOOLSYSTEM is worried about it and wants to avoid kids growin up speaking like l33t r3t/\rds.
So in essence..the school system is very good because they found the problem, and are trying to deal with it...

Did you ever wonder why languages change the spelling and meaning of words over time?

The reason why English has become the world's language is exactly because of its nature and willingness to change, adapt and absorb. The example of the extreme (as this is) cannot be seperated from the inclusion of slang and non-English language and syntax into the language. Indeed Modern English is *far* more like Middle Scots than it is Middle English (interestingly American English is closer to Middle English than Modern English is and further from Middle Scots).
Adapting and absorbing happens all the time. That's why byte is in the dictionary. Or newbie. Or flame. And why the word "armpit" can be used to describe a mire-like place where decent people wouldn't want to be seen.
BTW, the next edition of the OED and Chambers (the definitive texts for Modern English and Scots English respectively) will be including the words txt (yes without the e) and txting as acceptable forms of referring to SMS conversation (which is ridiculously popular over here, where everyone own's a mobile).
Regards,
Eduin

Why are mobile phones so popular in Europe Ed? Last time I went to Germany it seemed that every Tom, d**k and Harry had one. I mean they are popular here in the States and all but I would hazard a guess that it is less than half our pop (maybe even as low as 25 percent) that uses them.
I can't think of a single reason I would want to own one (besides for emergencies but I probably wouldn't answer the damn thing anyway). I rarely answer my phone at home and screen my calls with my answering machine and voice mail. I sure as hell would be offended if I received a call while eating dinner in a restaurant with my family.
The trend in the States is starting to bother me and it is not even close, I imagine, to what you would have to deal with elsewhere. Why do people think I want to hear their conversation with their boyfriend or girlfriend while I am waiting in line at the grocery store? I would love a law that would allow us to cram the damn things down their throats when in public lol but I guess that is wishful thinking. Thank god they are passing laws and making restaurants in some areas "mobile free".
Does the average person in Europe have a total disregard for the respect of others by talking on the phone during dinner and theater like they do here?

Lol and Luthar, you are a fucktard. Who the f**k do you think you are by passing advice like that? You are the most guilty of anyone on these boards by trying to "pass the buck".

by all having a cell, it doesn't mean we would use it at dinner or in a theatre.
I have a cell since I am 14, I was in boardingschool and my parents were always abroad. And to be honest, I can't live without it, my friends and family in Europe and me living here in N-America makes it that way for me

Basically its a more mature market but also as Europe has never had the level of Socialised telecoms which meant Americans got free local calls from their monopoly Baby Bell, paying to use a mobile wasn't the same barrier to entry it is in the US. Also Europe adheres to international standards so its far cheaper for the hardware due to the economies of scale.

Hence the popularity of txting.

I admit...I am a fucktard...but only in your eyes, and probably others posting on this board. But as Vekril once put it so well, everyone has the right to be entiteled to his opinion. Isn't that what freedom of speech is? One of the cornerstones in the US contitution I believe.
My opinion is that Bush is a fucktard that are trying to hide his mistake with a war....I stand for that...hence why I posted as I did

Pretty strange to see Eduin defend this girl... I think we can all admit that her 'style' is well outside of the norm, and probably will be for a very long time still.
*shrug* sure languages mutate, but let's be real a sec. 'FTF' will never be understood as 'face to face.' That's just plain idiocy.
