Why do they blur out someone flipping someone else off?

There's gotta be a reason for it, I just can't find anything that explains why.

Because the meaning of the gesture is recognized as the same thing as saying it.

Nahu, here's a book for ya. It's written by one of the local radio dj's here and seems like it'd be a good read for this type of issue.

To be over protective. Little children may not be able to imitate the words said on television or may understand the words are bad, but they can imitate the hand gestures as well as not understand that the gestures are the non spoken equivalent to cursing.. That and all the Mrs. Lovejoys out there can't help by cry " Wont somebody please think about the children".

No, it's mostly because advertisers will get complaints and they will pull their ads, so the show will lose revenue. The government isn't nearly as controlling as the advertisers.

For example, you can theoretically say "f**k" on network television, so long as it doesn't have anything to do with ****. Like, if you say, "that hurt like f**k" that doesn't technically violate any laws. However, the advertisers will get a billion complaints and they'll all stop paying for your show.

But what if it's a cable channel? For instance, I was watching VH1's 100 greatest moments in rock or whatever, and one of them was the protest outside Eminem's performance at some music awards show in which he performed next to Elton John. At the end of the show they hold hands and bow for the crowd, but Eminem goes and flips the crowd off.

The blurred out his hand. Why? It was 9pm on VH-1, which last I checked its not network TV.

I already answered the question. Fear for those who are not supposed to watch something that still might. That coupled with the fear that their over zealous parents will make a crusade out of it. At some point, certain stations and networks, like cable HBO channels, feel if you enter their realm, then you shouldn't complain.

I hate censorship but I can live with it. One thing I noticed lately did bug me though. I was half watching some cheesy show/movie and they f*****g bleeped SUCK. Not "Suck my d**k, b***h"; "Wow that sucked." kind of thing.

Did you miss the part where I said this was on a show on VH-1?

as for VH1:
The same reason applies. They are protecting themselves because they don't want to be known as a network station that conveys related actions. Because they do not usually present shows that allow certain language or actions, they expect their audience will let their guard down slightly as they don't anticipate anything too vulgar. Once again, it has to do with all the Mrs. Lovejoys crying "Wont somebody please think about the children".

The anticipation of resentment. If their niche in the market involved a large amount of cursing or graphic actions, then their audience would be those expecting those actions. You will find stations either allow or don't allow acts/language. Stations don't usually practice selectivity for certain things. I can't watch Casino, or any classic violent movie without hearing bleeps for half of the dialog.

No.. your answers confuse me and contradict each other and frankly I didn't feel like listening any more, sorry. I lost interest in the whole thing.

First you say it's to protect the young'uns. Then you say that even tho the young'uns need to be protected, sometimes cable networks tell people watch us at your own risk. Then I say well this happened on cable. So then you're like well it's to protect the young'uns anyways. Well that doesn't really make sense anymore which is why I said forget it. I don't really care about the stupid censorship rules anymore.

Each time you adapted your question, I tried to involve the new elements into the answer.

If a station isn't known for usually having cursing or violence, then it will not change its habits to match some amazing event ( Elton John & Eminem's performance ). It isn't that VH 1's audience isn't mature enough to understand a gesture, but that they are protecting themselves. A large enough amount of people that watch VH 1 expect it not allow certain gestures and actions. Because of those people, an important part of the audience, the station protects its niche.

Nah I think VH-1 is more or less like MTV, and I don't think they show flip-offs on MTV either. It's basic cable...HBO and Cinemax etc can show those things, as well as boobies from time to time. (i leik teh boobies)

It's pretty much like Jinu said I think...if you show flip-offs on basic cable station, or say "f**k" in any way, shape, or form..you're going to get a slew of shit from the part of the community that feels it's wrong to let stuff like that air on basic cable, you'll lose ratings etc.. etc.. It's just not a good idea, so on that basis it's not done, I guess...(im not sure that's exactly what Jinu was saying...ugh)

The only time I think I've ever heard the word "f**k" used on basic cable is on that scared straight show that they aired on MTV back in the day....thems niggas wuz scurry..

Jinu already answered the question. It's because of the advertisers, not the FCC regulations.

That's why comedy central is able to get away with all of what they do on Southpark and such, because the advertisers don't care.

That's also why the Superbowl nip slip was such a big deal. It didn't go against any FCC rules or regulations or anything, but it really upset a lot of people which in turn upset the advertisers.

Network TV and cable TV shows would not exist if it weren't for advertisers.

Not everything is edited right before it goes on the air guys. Many times and edited version of something will be made at some point, and then be the definitive edited version that is always played to be safe and save time/money.

So one day a cencer feals suck is inapropriate, it gets beeps from a movie, and is therefor beeped for all time. that vh1 special may have originaly aired at an earlyer time, or the footage they used could have come edited like that.

I sometimes wonder about the crack thing..

Why is it that some workers bend over and almost their ENTIRE butt is bulging out of their jeans and yet they do not take action to correct this?!? How do you not notice your bare ass is hanging out of the back of your pants when wind is blowing right up your asscrack? HOW?

I think CBS would disagree, seeing as they had to fork over half a million bucks over the nipple in question.

I remember a few years ago, I think CBS showed "Saving Private Ryan" unedited and uninterrupted. They had guys saying "f**k" all over the place and it as far as I know nothing happened. But Opie & Anthony couldn't say the word "masturbate" or "blow" (in reference to a b*****b) on the radio. If Saving Private Ryan had been a documentary it would have made sense, but it wasn't. The laws are just stupidly inconsistent and inconsistently enforced.

And VH1 is basic cable, they still rely heavily on advertising dollars. But the same logic behind blurring out a middle finger should apply to saying "fooking" or "frickin," since those are both intended to mean "f**k" much like the middle finger. Like I said, the laws are just really inconsistent.
