SADDAM'S SOLDIERS SURRENDER
Mar 9 2003

Mike Hamilton reports from Camp Coyote in Kuwait

TERRIFIED Iraqi soldiers have crossed the Kuwait border and tried to surrender to British forces - because they thought the war had already started.

The motley band of a dozen troops waved the white flag as British paratroopers tested their weapons during a routine exercise.

The stunned Paras from 16 Air Assault Brigade were forced to tell the Iraqis they were not firing at them, and ordered them back to their home country telling them it was too early to surrender.

The drama unfolded last Monday as the Para batallion tested mortars and artillery weapons to make sure they were working properly.

The Iraqis found a way across the fortified border, which is sealed off with barbed-wire fencing, watchtowers and huge trenches.

TESTING TIME: British Marines are preparing for war

A British Army source in Kuwait contacted me to explain how the extraordinary surrender bid unfolded. The source said: "The British guys on the front-line could not believe what was happening. They were on pre-war exercises when all of a sudden these Iraqis turned up out of nowhere, with their hands in the air, saying they wanted to surrender.

"They had heard firing and thought it was the start of the war.

"The Paras are a tough, battle-hardened lot but were moved by the plight of the Iraqis. There was nothing they could do other than send them back.

"They were a motley bunch and you could barely describe them as soldiers - they were poorly equipped and didn't even have proper boots. Their physical condition was dreadful and they had obviously not had a square meal for ages. No one has ever known a group of so-called soldiers surrender before a shot has been fired in anger."

Last night the Ministry of Defence officially denied the incident had taken place, but the story was corroborated by an intelligence source.

Meanwhile Saddam Hussein has ordered thousands of troops back to Baghdad as he turns the city into a fortress.

It is believed that two rings of steel are being established around Baghdad. The outer one consists of regular Iraqi army soldiers and the inner one is made up of Republican Guard fighters - thought to be the only troops that will put up fierce resistance.

Aside from my desire to invade Iraq in order to check off one more despot that will use terrorists to strike at the US, I am also beginning to see reports of perhaps an even greater reason to invade. The people of Iraq are really living in hell right now under Saddam's regime. From the pro-war rallies held by former Iraqis living in the US, to the Kurdish leader on CNN (who holds a doctorate degree and spoke near perfect English) saying he prays the U.S. will not be swayed against the invasion by the weak U.N. nations like France, I came to one solid conclusion: The sooner we invade and remove Saddam the better off everybody will be.

And, after we finish mopping up Saddam, I look forward to dealing with North Korea and Iran.

Anyone else thinking that if a bunch of poorly equipped, raggity-ann soldiers can get through the "fortified border with huge tranches" that a well trained commando force and do the same and wreak some chemical hell among the allied troops?

not a good sign, seems like military is getting lacks thinking "oh, it's just iraqi's"...

The trenches are most likely not guarded, or sparsely guard at best.

The threat of Iraq suddenly attacking UN forces is not one of the highest concerns on the list. Infact, im sure many would love to see that happen. Iraq does not want war, and is doing what it can to delay/prevent military action. An active strike against UN forces would end all war talks, and the bombs would start falling.

To fight against an invading force that is overwhelmingly more powerful than you, you have to be a true believer in the cause. Saddam does his best to brainwash his people into believing that he wants what is best for them and that the US is evil, but when the invasion starts, I would expect the majority of the troops to surrender immediately...to get a decent meal if nothing else. The troops that are truly loyal to Saddam are in the Republican guard, which I'm sure will put up a fight as the US/UK forces near Baghdad. The majority of the army though are a bunch of half-starved, ill-equipped mongrels that will most likely surrender at the first opportunity, just like they did in 1991. They're not out there because they love Saddam or hate the US, but because they don't want to be tortured or have their wives/children raped and murdered as motivation.

I agree with Fluxus. The more I see Iraqi people who are now in the US lobbying for the US to remove Saddam, for the sake of their friends and family that are still there, the more I think that Hussein needs to go. Whether you believe that he is a threat to the US or not, you could consider it a humanitarian mission to oust Saddam and free the Iraqi people from their government, which is more cruel than you could imagine.

Petition from http://www.iraqiamericans.com/

Quote:
TO:

Hon. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations
and Honorable Members of the UN Security Council

United Nations
New York, NY 10017

PETITION

We, the undersigned members of the Iraqi-American community in the United States, and their friends and supporters, petition you to give full consideration to the human rights of the Iraqi people in deliberating the UN solutions to the problems of Iraq. Iraqi-Americans join the world community in looking to the United Nations Security council for a comprehensive and fundamental solution to Iraq that establishes dominant peace and enables the norms of peaceful civilian life in Iraq.

Our Iraqi-American community, friends and supporters, are concerned about the Iraqi people. We are not convinced that such measures as sending an inspection team, or the removal of WMS from the present Iraqi government, will bring a dominant peace to Iraq, to the region, or to the world. These measures are important, but they will not lead to a permanent peace either for Iraqis or their neighbors in the region. UN inspectors cannot stay in Iraq indefinitely, nor can UN sanctions be applied forever. They are necessary for now to ensure that Saddam Hussein will not use the rich resources of Iraq to rebuild his military machine. However, Iraqi people desperately need these resources to rebuild a peaceful life ruined by wars and the environmental destruction perpetrated by Saddam.

The UN is under obligation to find a solution to this problem. The people of Iraq are the direct victims of Saddam Hussein’s tyranny and WMD, war, famine and UN sanctions. They live under the yoke of oppression and domestic terrorism, without any legal or constitutional guarantees to protect them. The UN has yet to implement existing resolutions, such as UN Security Council Resolution 688 passed in 1991, to protect the Iraqi people.

We appeal to the UN Security Council to enforce Resolution 688, and all other resolutions protecting the civil and human rights of the Iraqi people. We want the evil tyrant Saddam Hussein brought to justice before an international tribunal for his crimes against humanity.

We call on all members of the Security Council to set aside their differences and unite in their efforts to help the people of Iraq. Failure to act now will only result in more death and destruction in Iraq and political instability in the region and the rest of the world.
