Ceilings less than 7 feet high?
I'm going to gut a basement and put a few rooms down there. Basically an apartment, self contained and small. One bedroom, one full bath, kitchen/living room/dining room combo and 2 more rooms for whatever. All quality fittings, floors, walls, appliances, just very low ceilings. And yes, there will be many good sized windows, its not a fully buried basement. It would be like a backup apartment for me if I ever move out of state. I can come back here and not worry about having a place to stay. Never having to leave an apartment unrented just to crash in for a few months out of the year.
I was also wondering if it was rentable, to a young college kid I was thinking. Yes I know I could get 42 mexicans living in there, not interested.
Has anyone ever rented an apartment with ceilings less than 7 feet high?
Ever seen one?

I've been in low ceiling basements in college. It sucks, but you get used to it, although I never had to live in one.
Something to consider tho.... 7 feet is usually the minimum ceiling height by code in most municipalities. If it was furnished space before the that part of the code was in effect you'd be grandfathered, or you just might not care about codes

I wouldn't have a problem living in a 7 foot high room. I am about 6 foot even.

I've seen people living in alot worse than what you're describing.
NYC apartments are utterly ridiculous.

Funny you should ask, I just saw something having to do with this.
The only thing you really have to worry about are building codes. 7 feet shouldn't be too low for most people but I don't think it's legal. I know ceilings in SF have to be at least 8 feet high, I can't imagine it would be much lower than that for NYC.
A house here that had an asking price of 850k had to be dropped to 550k (and the guy got served a moderate fine) because the building inspectors came and raked the guy over the coals for trying to sell a house with "2 extra units downstairs" which had ceilings which were too low to conform to building code.
Think the problem isn't finding someone to live there. You will always be able to do that. The problem is doing it legally.

My 1st apartment was pretty nice for $300 / month and all utilities paid! It was a basement apt. Sounds like a shit hole but it was actually really clean. Had my own entrance and all that. Even had windows!
I was in college @ the time

My g/f rented a tiny upstairs room in an old house that had a sloped ceiling going from 7ft to 4ft on one side. I used to hit my head at least once per visit there because of it.

on another note it would be pretty cheap to heat with such low ceilings.

My cousin once rented an old farm house here in central Mass. All the ceilings in that place were under 7 feet but thats the way they used to build houses. Course 150-200 years ago people were shorter, and when all you had for heat were fireplaces and wood burning kitchen stoves, well the smaller the rooms were the better in the winter.
But at least around here the minimum legal height is 7'4" but I have seen basement apartments that were barely 6'8". Course I once saw one with a bathroom that was pretty much a toilet stuck in a closet. It was impossible to close the door when using it as the door was like 4 inches from the front of the bowl .
