Opinions:

I am going to Berlin on business and I am going to take an extra 6 or 7 days.

I am thinking of two possible itineraries:

1) Berlin, Prague & Vienna (Haven't been to Vienna & neither has wife)

2) Berlin, Frankfurt (Rhine castles) & Strasbourg

I am taking my kids =p 4 & 1 so I don't know if I will rent a car or just take the trains. I am leaning towards car.

Any suggestions?

I'd stick to public transportation - at least in western europe. It'll take you longer just to find a parking space than take the bus. Public Transportation is safe, clean and usually on time. Since distances aren't that big, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you thought gas in the US was expensive, you'd be in for a shock though. Normal is ~1.25 Euro in Germany per liter. 1 gal = 3.8 Litres and 1 Euro = $1.20 - So it's about $5.70 per gallon.

@Nemo

That makes about as much sense as recommending against going to New York... it happened, people move on.

You could fly back through London and stay a day or two - definatly a great place to visit.

edit:

If you considered adding a couple more days, Rome would definatly be worth a visit.

Last time I was in Europe we rented a car, it was much nicer because you could just stop anywhere in between cities and go at your own pace. Gas price really isn't a big issue I am more concerned with the trains & luggage & stroller & kids & shit. With a car I can just drive up to the hotel, park it there & take public transport within the cities.

Been to London many times & been to Rome already, I want to see something new Wink
