So my s****y old car won't pass emissions because the check engine light is on, it passed everything else but it's automatic fail if the check engine light is on because the state is gay. I did some home surgery and turned off the check engine light for good... am i going to get in trouble if i go in or is it purely a visual thing?

unless they hook a computer up to your can and run it through diagnostics, they won't really be able to tell you disabled the light.
Even if they do, they'll just find out why your light is on, so you'll know what to get fixed

If you are in NY, find a place where you can buy an inspection. I did it for years. Half the shit boxes I owned to drive into the ghetto had phony inspections.
Atlantic ave in bklyn is a great place for that.

Did they actually do the test? Or just say, no light, no test? If it's basically running fine with the engine light on, it wouldn't be unlikely if it were warning you about your catalytic converter being shot, in which case you might fail the test. You should at least get a mechanic to read the error code before you waste your time on the test.

Yeah they ran the test and got the print out thing everything said pass except check engine light which failed everything even though the car passed the emission part of the test.

your gas cap can cause the check engine light to come on. Nothing wrong with the car just faulty gas cap.

If the check engine light is on, there usually is SOMETHING going on...if you passed emissions, though, it isn't anything serious.
The light pops on when, as stated above, there is a leak in the gascap or when any one of the sensors on the engine isn't functioning properly.
If you disabled the light, and you passed emissions, you should just have them (or another station) retest it.
It's a little more difficult nowadays to "buy" an emissions inspection in NY, Kbarr...at least, from what I remember, the dyno that came into play in 1999 or so makes it a lot more difficult to "pass" a car.

Well, it didn't sound like he wanted to spend the money...LOL
Some of those sensors are VERY pricey, though.

Because in alot of instances just getting your car hooked up to the machine will cost you at least one testicle.
