I just picked up a copy of the Dungeon Master 3.5 guide and Monster Manual and it seems pretty confusing, an order of the Players Handbook is coming in. Me and a few friends plan on playing once a week on a Sunday when we have nothing better to do. It seems hard but I can probably get it down, so, anyone else ever play or still play?

I used to when I went camping with my older brother and his friends...when I was like 17. It was fun, not something I would waste my time doing if I wasn't bored or had nothing better to do though.

Well, the thing is.. around here things are pretty boring for a bunch of 14 year olds and on Sunday, cmon, no one does anything on Sunday so we figured what the hell lets give it a shot but my parents are thinking I'm going to get obsessed and kill myself over it.

Typcial reaction parents have from DnD. They don't mind vedio games (well not soccer moms), but when DnD comes into subject, they claim the devil is going to posess you or some shit.

You have to have a good imagination or it sucks total d**k.

I have been playing D&D for the better part of 20 years. Seen a lot of changes, and while most of them are good the new d20 system seems too complicated to make the game enjoyable. If you get a chance to get your hands on 2nd Edition rules grab them. Much easier for the novice player.

I play D&D and will be starting a campaign soon for my buddies. I'll do 3.5, but not D20. It will only be standard stuff, otherwise it gets too confusing with the 456,877 spells spread out between the D20 books.

the DMG and MM are mostly worthless, you could fumble your way through most gaming sessions with only the Players Handbook.

My brother stole 2 copys of every 2nd ed DnD book from one of his semi-friends when he was put in jail for molesting like 32 4-6 year olds.

And hella magic cards and a bunch of other expencive gaming books/cards.

I have a weekly gaming session with 3.5 ruleset. We are doing a pre-war of the lance Dragonlance campaign which means unnatural healing whatsoever =(.

The new rules takes a bit to get used to. If you have ever played 3rd edition, its pretty much the same. They just cleaned up a few classes in 3.5 (Like the ranger). If you have never played 3rd edition but only 2nd edition, you should forget everything you know as it is entirely differnent.

Some of the biggest differences are no Thac0. Now characters get feats (which are AWSOME). Now there are legendary and prestige classes which are like uber classes that you have to meet a set of requirements to change. Also multi-classing is MUCH better and in fact kinda something you are supposed to do. The penalties are nothing like 2nd edition.

If you got any specific questions, let me know. I play a minotuar barbarian meself =)

I've had NWN since it came out, but been playing online recently with a couple people, kind of fun, I'd like to actually DM one once I learn the interface and whatnot.

Haven't played the whole pen and paper deal in a couple years, other than a half-assed session six months ago or so with Drevan and a few people.

Well, thanks for all the replies guys. It helped and yeah are there any guides that give you a good start because me and my friends are quite confused and unless the player handbook tells us we are probably going to have a hard time.

If you have like 80 bucks.. go buy MM, DMG and PH, minus the one you already have. Thats enough to get though the game as long as you all 3 read it all the way though and understand/remember it.

Me and my friends are splitting it up, like
I bought the DM guide, one bought the MM guide, and one is going to buy the PH.

Going though the Play's Guide 3.5 and all I have to say it is so tottaly different then AD&D 2nd Edition. Never mind, no THAC0, but also it seems like hte higher your AC the better now. I remember when liek -10 AC was like the best!!!

Use the mIRC info to get your hands on all the books you want.

The game seems to be alot more thought out then the older books, but still reading though the book. Seems some things are easier then the 2nd Edition and some things are more complecated.

Oh they did bring back the monk from AD&D 1st Edition though!! YAY!

Also, you don't have to follow ALL the rules to a "t". For instance, I'm not too picky on encumbrance, food, and how fast boats travel on blustery days, etc.

yep.
the books are just guidelines. Use what fits your style.

3rd edition is the easiest, and hasd attracted a lot of new players. But most people that started with 1st and 2nd, find it a bit confusing, since it basically redoes a lot of rules and mechanics, and so they have to learn it all again, trying to relate it to the older ones.

Oh man, that reminds me of this Nazi GM at a convention. Someone simply wanted to add some flavor to his character and used an illusion to add the appearance of flames in his eyes. The GM sat there literally for 6 minutes going over with him on how long it will last, if he's going to cast it now or later, etc. On top on that the tubosauras rex GM (LOLLOLL TM) after being a nazi the entire time, leans over and asks if I want the rest of my nachos.

I used to play games like D&D until i finally got tired of all the work involved. Computers just make role-playing games so much easier, no dice to roll, no calculations to make.... it's cake.
