I was just reading some articles about auto companies like Nissan or Scion looking for their piece of the action in Second Life … and it got me wondering. Is it known how many people are actively driving? If so, can we extrapolate from that to find out the hypothetical degree of pollution that would be produced in SL this way? Anyone willing to work on this, statistically?

That's … actually quite an interesting question. So much so, in fact, that the topic has already been dealt with, in a way. See Tony Walsh's take on it here: http://www.secretlair.com/index.php?/clickableculture/entry/is_second_life_sustainable/
That entry deals primarily with consumption of electrical energy, but it prove to be useful for your proposed task.
