Well, if you want to talk about something more interesting, then post something
But I was just thinking how on my way to work how much these little improvised flower arrangements and cardboard or wood signs that have started popping up along the road where some random person got killed p**s me off. I'm not heartless, but it's really not the place for it. That's what cemeteries are for. I understand the need to grieve, but it's not the place. They don't even own that land. Who gives them the right to say that I have to look at it every day for the next ten years? It's not like a website that I don't have to visit if I don't want to.
I used to read about how they did that in third-world countries, and I used to think how quaint they were. It's annoying that we do it now to. It's galling to feel like I'm surrounded by ignorant, superstitous peasants Or am I being unreasonable?

I didn't know it was a type of superstition...
but anyways, Ive seen a few around where I live and it kind of makes me feel uncomfortable *shrug*, makes me think of death.
That's the only thing I don't like about them, but I don't think I'd go as far as saying I don't want them there, or that they are peasants for putting them there. People should have the right to do that if they want to, it's no t like it's hurting anyone/thing.
EDIT: Besides the flowers :\

They bug the hell out of me, kinda the way ribbon campaigns for everything under the sun annoy me - it was a neat idea for a limited reason, but everyone and their Uncle Bob does it now.
My husband and I have talked about going and buying a ton of the little memorials on sale after Memorial Day and putting them on every block in our neighborhood in protest... one day we'll get around to actually doing it =P

You guys must not have enough to think about.
And keep in mind it's some random person to you, but not to the people putting the flowers out there. Regardless, I don't see what it could hurt.

People on the interstate are human beings in control of 1 ton of steel (give or take) going 60mph+. I'd like as many reminders of their mortality as possible.

Ya i agree with brutul. It may be annoying to you but think of it from their side. Maybe your view would change if it were someone you knew who died there.

Well, I'm sympathetic of course. But I think there should be a middle ground. Oversensitivity is just as bad as insensitivity. I object to people appropriating public land for their own private purposes, however noble those might be. I have a horror of doing bad things for good reasons.

they p**s me off because then i start to wonder what the story is, and if you see two shrine near each other, i wonder if maybe they died in the same crash or something.
and then i started to wonder if all these people are those who died on the side of the road, or in another area completely, but someone just made the shrine on the road so other people will know that someone died in the vicinity.

I have seen a few around. I saw many in Mexico. They don't get interesting until you see one that is overgrown with weeds or dead flowers. Kind of like a cemetary. You go to the older part and see graves that are slightly humped or have grass all around them. Makes you think that maybe people visited and tended the shrine or grave every week, laying down flowers or pictures or little toys in the case of children, but then the visits became once a month after awhile, and then only on holidays or birthdays of the deceased, and finally not at all after a few years. Maybe the loved ones moved away or died themselves. Or maybe they moved on with their lives and healed enough to where they didn't have to do all that to get some peace.
There is one along the road I travel to work. Some teenager died in a car wreck on the spot about two years ago this December. It is well kept and though there are weeds all around it there are none in front of it so you can see it. There is a little white cross with "Welcome" written on a sign. I wonder how long they will keep it up. Maybe they will come by someday and pick it up to take home. Maybe they'll pack it neatly away in a box and then put the box in the garage with other boxes.
Ok, I'm getting morbid. Maybe I should stop.

I drive many hours on the road per day atleast 2-4 and I see these all the time. If anything the serve the purpose of reminding people Hey Stupid that could be you so stop f*****g around and drive.
The main Freeway around me and Silvermouse is 101 and that thing is startting to look like a 40mile long graveyard... I hope people see these and realize that everyone is not safe and might put away the cell phone or take their hand out of their pants...

Isn't it illegal to drive and talk on the phone in California? I see people do it all of the time.

Hell no, it's not illegal. I think they may have tried to pass laws on it but DENIED.
People would b***h too much. That's why they invented those neat little speakercom things where you just talk like youre in the same room as the person.

i get annoyed seeing those signs everywhere.
its like saying "hello, someone died, just wanted you to know"
ok, thanks... that was the highlight of my day.
i hate people who try to spread their sadness to others, i'd rather be gang-banged by 10 prizon convicts at the same time for the rest of my waking life.

Bingo. A good friend of mine died in a crash. Flowers and a sign were put there to remember his life. Everytime I drive by it I think about how much of an impact he had on my life and many others do the same.
Grunting, if I saw someone do what you did, I swear I'd kill you. I'm not kidding, murder isn't too tough to get away with.

Well, how long should the memorial be up? I mean, what's a cemetary for then?
Anyways, the latest trend in my area is immigrants drowning in the river because they can't swim, yet they are swimming in the river. Do you see the problem here?

Yeah, you need to dirty that river up a bit!
Those crazy Canadians would never think to swim across the Detroit River, and we like it that way.

Anyone ever chase someone into a pole? Causing people to make the dreaded shrine?
Them "I" beams sure don't move:)
Same exact beams, nothing has changed since way back then.

you can legally clean up roadside shrines that are on state property in some places.. or call your highway dpt since its technically litter.

I'm getting tired of seeing shoes hanging from every intersection traffic light suspension cable. There's two pairs of them within 2 miles of each other on the same road.

To me those shrines are celebrating the person's death not their life. I don't andorse them.
