Do you think that the stuff you write here ends up being scanned by a computer for keywords or patterns and possibly saved in a file or sent to some flunky for analysis? So that like, if you're constantly ranting about how you hate the US etc, and think everyone should die, maybe you'd end up on a no-fly list or something. I think about that every now and then - I've kind of assumed there was at least a chance of it. But realistically, what are the odds? I'm sort of a moderate conspiracy theorist, but sort of realistic too - I'm sure they'd do it if they could, but I'm not sure if it's feasible.
Especially since the board requires registration to read - it's trivial to make a fake ID, but seems like it might take human intervention. Then again, with vast amounts of money you could probably make automated software that would could make an account on most common systems without human intervention, then just poll it periodically like any other search engine. The intelligence agencies have huge resources - I wonder what's really beyond their capabilities?
Keeping a database of people who post on message boards might not be so hard to do after all if you had say, a trillion dollars (I made that up; I don't know their budget: it's probably not public anyway). You could probably match IP addresses to messages from monitoring traffic at selected core routers (not sure if they could do that without everyone finding out), and correlate msg board IDs with personal info.
So what do you think the odds are that what you post here is being scanned by the government? Realistically, I think I'd put the odds around 40%. Any other opinions?

A leeching script for a customized board might be a bit more work than they care to put in. They may very well have some kind of text ripper for phpBB boards, but it's unlikely they are gathering every piece of text on every board on the net.

A bit off topic, but when I was in high school our religion teacher made us write some letters to certain governments to "free political prisoners". It was some Amnesty International petition thing. I ended up writing a letter to China. When my dad had to be there for business, and applied for his visa, they asked him questions about it. It took em quite awhile to get his visa. And this is almost 10 years ago.

RealPoor web pages aren't encrypted or anything. Everytime someone loads a thread there are 2-40 computers seeing the traffic in plain text. Some of these computers might even use satellite links to transfer data.

exactly. They don't need to spider webpages when they can just capture packets and scan for keywords. Thats how they monitor e-mail as well.

True. I assume they probably do do that to some extent. But all packets even for a single session don't necessarily follow the same path, so it's a little hard to be sure of getting an entire stream. Although if you monitor enough points, you can probably match them up.
I haven't seen any probability estimates besides mine though - who thinks that what you post here might be being read by the government? I'm just curious if I'm more or less suspicious than others. Not that I'm worried or anything: I for one welcome our national security overlords

I'd put the odds closer to 90% that this is at least being context scanned by a computer somewhere for illicit activities.
