Ack, an obituary I hated to read. Coach Herb Brooks, the architect behind USA's stunning upset over the mighty Soviet Union in the 1980 olympics, was found dead today 40 yards from his over-turned minivan. Apparently, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
It's a shame, Herb Brooks was one of the greatest innovators the game has ever known and few did more for American hockey than he did. Team USA lost to the Soviets in an exhibition a week earlier by a score of 10-3, which was fairly indicative of our program at the time, but showed 'em a thing or two on our soil when it mattered the most. An impossible fairy tale, the final minutes still give me chills...
