No. As a matter of fact, arguing in general has never changed my mind of anything. Maybe I'd concede a point or two, but...

However, I've found that beating up people who disagree with me is a good way to change their opinion to be like mine.

Yes.

I was still torn up until the morning before elections, and I decided to come to realpoor for political advice. I read through almost every thread in the political forum, and the constant belittling and insults to the democratic party changed my vote. I decided I didn't want to be an Idiot, liberal or a leftist. I still don't know what a liberal or a leftist is, but the way a certain individual constantly talked down to them convinced me of one thing: I don't want to be a liberal or a leftist!

Another gentleman had very strong arguments as well. Everytime somebody from the democratic piont of view tried to argue a point, he simply responded with one or two word insults. My thought was that the point contrary to his was so weak it was not even worth discussing. That's the kind of viewpoint I like, and that's the kind of party I want to be involved with.

So, I would like to say that my vote for Bush and other republicans can be solely attributed to the fine debate skills of a certain unnamed individuals. You know who you are, and I /salute you.

Unfortunatly, I can't think of a time an argument did. It's a shame too. The older I get the harder it becomes to change my mind on issues. I hope the day comes where an argument is so clear and obviously logical that I can't disagree. And from there, I change my mind and am enlightened. Until then, you're really never completely sure that you're right because you never had something wrong to base it off of.

That last part isn't really important.

Yes. An argument may never have changed my opinion on the spot, but they have in the past caused me to rethink my positions on certain issues and analyze them over time and modify them.

So while not instantly changing my opinion, arguments have often served as the spark or catalyst for self reflection that has led to a change in beliefs.

Political debate is very healthy, even if it does not change your opinion, it forces you to critically evaluate your own beliefs and the justifications for them. This leads to a better understanding of your own values, and a better ability to explain or defend them to others.

Gotta keep an open mind, i voted yes because sometimes during arguments you learn things you didn't know before (after i verify they are true ;p) and you just gotta readjust your thinking to the facts.

i changed alot of peoples minds at my work and seeded some serious doubt in others even though they still voted for bush.

I think the only people you can change are the people who dont have a clue and are just waiting for someone to come alng and tell them who to vote for .

yes- If i have an opinion about something, and i cannot hold my own in an argument on the issue then I end up reevaluating my stance. I would even go so far as to say that most of my opinions are the result of many many arguments with people of differing opinions all put together. Of course that doesnt mean that during an argument i'll come out and say that i was wrong or that the other person convinced me to think over the issue more, but thats just my own pride Smile
