|

Greetings
I want to mess with creating a database for my office...I don't have the MS app tho. Openoffice. org doesn't offer a db app and I looked at mySQL and it is beyond my capabilities :p
Anyone have a copy of the MS one that I can FTP to?

heh, Khrath, my talents lie elsewhere :p
I can't even figure out how to start using it..it looks like programming stuff, tho..and while I did take c++ and datastructures as electives a few years back, I can't remember a f*****g thing about them

you can create a database in access that behaves like any other SQL database, not too hard.

I don't have Access, that's the problem. And..I've never used it, but from what I have heard, it's easy enough...

use your extensive connectiosn to get a copy, the copy protection on office 2000 is just a CD key.

Someone had office xp up on r00tus's ftp.
You can also make one using VB (about the only thing VB is good for is databases).
In reality it only takes a whopping 10 clicks to make a DB in VB, it isn't too difficult, even for blondes.

Spending 4 hours learning SQL syntax (which you'll end up learning to mess with MS-Access anyway) will pay off one hundredfold.
I'm going to type this next part in all caps, because it's true:
MS ACCESS LOSES RECORDS
MS ACCESS IS NOT BACKWARD COMPATIBLE 99% OF THE TIME
MS ACCESS ADDS "EXTENTIONS" TO SQL WHICH DESTROY DATA
MS ACCESS LOSES RECORDS
MS ACCESS FORGETS RELATIONSHIPS
MS ACCESS WILL KEEP YOUR DBA UP TILL 3AM ON A FRIDAY NIGHT, UNPAID, OVERTIME.
ARE YOU THE DBA?
Sincerely,
Elavis Q. Rumplebuns

have never had that problem. any of them. i have close to 35,000 records in my database at work. thats not to big considering companies like fed-ex are in the millions and use ms access without those problems.
the thing about access loseing records it dont have a good undo. so if you make a mistake or dont know the program very well it can be a pain in the ass. also alot of times access may look like it dont have the records but even the slightest fuckup in your filter/form/qry etc can filter everything. access has tools to prevent this from happening to.
access wont forget a relationship unless you do something to alter the key fields or alter the field relateing to your other form. creating a one to many relationship for example then adding to the one will make the relationship f**k up
if you want a free access just dl it from kazaa

hehehe...
I want Access so I can try my hand at creating a database for my office is all. The school district I work for won't fork over the money at this time of year, unfortunately.
I don't have a ton of information to put into it just yet. Would be less than 200 records, each with about 20 fields of info right now. I am thinking it would make MY life easier.
And yes, Elavis, it would be worth it, I suppose--will consider looking at it again....

access is really easy to use. even the vba stuff.
data entry is easy to. you can make froms to enter from or even do it in excell and import it.
just out of curiosity what kind of database are you using. are you makeing reports and query all the time or just storing data. for 200 entries id just use a spreadsheet for now untill you are using multiple data sources and have lots of entries. or need reports ect.
i would upload office xp but with my luck i would get caught

Access does have problems , the ones Dunn describe.
It was never made for high end database use.
(Fedex does not 'use' access. They link tho it, to MS SQL 2000.
Many companies do this, because for long time there were working controls in Visual Studio 6, or CystalReports. That has changed with Visual Studio .NET tho)
Access normally falls apart around 70-80Meg range. Depends on amount Tables/records , version.
You get to around that size, and it will do what said Dunn.
Just put a small MS sql server.(personal version) Make the tables. Link it into Access. You're back in business.
For what principessa wants to do. Access will do just fine. She doesn't need to learn mysql or any other SQL servers.
Just grab it from any filesharing thing. Like kazza or whatever. Scan for virii first tho. MS Office XP Pro. is best to get.
