I'm (kind of sort of) attracted to this game by the fact that it's (kind of sort of) Dungeons and Dragons, I mean it even says so in the title but it's not really that, is it? I'm not a huge MMO fan in general, just played P&P. So are there others like me out there, who have found the game to their liking and would recommend it? With all its rule deviations and whatnot?

I'm not really sure, you haven't described what it is exactly that you want from DDO. It will not be a valid substitute for your weekly game of D&D P&P, but it might be an interesting addition. Give it a shot, see what happens. After all, that's what the trial accounts are there for.
