|

I'm looking at picking up a DVR for my living room.
I don't want a Tivo where I have to pay a lame ass monthly fee, I want something I can pay for and be done with.
I don't know much of shit about DVR's, so I figured I'd see if any of you have experience with them, or are possibly better informed on the topic than I am.
High definition isn't a must, but would be nice for the future when it's alot more common.
Right now I am just looking for something that can record shit like That 70's show, so I can play WoW or j**k off, rather than watch it when it's on.

If you have cable, odds are they can just replace your cable box with a DVR version. You might need digital cable though.

I don't have cable...long story....$40 a month for like 60 channels....apartment complex....contract with cable company....no other option.....
Anyways, I want something that I can use universally, with any company, anywhere I go, or every with over the air broadcasts.
Do you have to have Tivo service to use a Tivo? I read those were hackable, can you use them without paying the monthly fee?

Why not set up a Linux box with a TV tuner?

The original (series 1) Tivos were usable without a subscription, and maybe still are if you can find one on ebay or something. The ones you can buy today are essentially useless without a subscription I think. Not sure about some of the others, like replayTV or whatever.

Yah Im pretty sure you have to pay for the service on all of them. Even Cable companies have a fee for DVR. Atleast TimeWarner and Comcast do.
You either have to set a PC with a TV tuner or go old fashion with a VHS or a DVD - R. DVD -RW's can fit a lot of shit on it so it might not be a bad option.

The fee for tivo is for the schedule I think, if you want to just manually set up recording times I think you can do that w/o paying.

You can get a replay tv. I have one I'm going to ebay soon. works with anything, and has an onscreen guide. mine doesnt do HD. Mine is prepaid for life so no subscription or cost beyond the unit.

I looked into this too and ended up settling with the DVR from Cumcast.
With Tivo you can either pay the $13/mo or pay a one time $200 fee on top of the cost of the unit. You can also build your own using linux (I decided I was too lazy) or be super 80's and buy a VCR

if you got a spare pc get a tuner card
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_pvr250.html
is a good one
then get beyondtv
the interface can be auto loaded when the pc is on so the wife factor never sees the computer part just the pvr part
full schedualing ect for no monthy fee ever
http://www.snapstream.com/products/beyondtv/
only supports HDTV recording for OTA stuff atm
The interface is very easy to use and shouldn't cause the wife to go into "NOSEXFORYOUMODE"
