I'm probably going to buy a dvd burner soon, but I want to be able to (lazily) burn mpg/avi files in a way that would be playable by a standard dvd player hooked up to a TV. Anyone know anything about how to do this, or can most dvd players already play mpg/avi files?

Basically I want to be able to burn anime that I download for a friend who doesn't have a computer and can't watch ecchi stuff on public computers or I'd burn it as mpg/avi on CD.

certain new dvd players will play DIVX/XVID (Avi) files.

almost all already play mpg since that's what dvd uses.

you can get one that plays DIVX/XVID for around $65 or less at CC or BB or where ever really. just make sure it does. then you can burn them on CD too.

if you want a burner, some of the best and fastest out are currently for whatever reason super cheap. pick one up fast in case they raise em back up(unlikely)

I got a NEC-3520 a month or so ago for 40 bucks (after discounts/coupons) on Buy.com. Burns and verifies single-layer discs in 11 minutes, double-layer in 19. Came bundled with Nero software, and can burn DVDs to play in my ancient Pioneer DVD player.

Don't really need help picking out a dvd burner, but thanks, glad to know my plans won't require me to not be lazy.

when you get a burner, use nero ultra.

nero vision express will transcode any mpeg/avi to dvd files creating menu's also. i suggest using dvd-r's because they are going to be played by the most players. they say 95% of all dvd players will play dvd-r's.

thats pretty much it, i use vision express to recode PAL to NTSC, and to burn avi/mpeg files to dvd format to play on my player.
