What program should I use to burn movies to DVD-Rs??
I have a DVD-RW drive and want to burn some movies onto it and play on a dvd player.
Nero doesn't work. it only burns CD-RWs which doesnt make f*****g sense because VCDs compile into 1.4 gb.
Nero ultra only has data avail for DVD burn.

No I'm trying to burn .avi movies to dvd-r
I burned it in "data" format but it did not work.
Nero doesn't have an option to burn a DVD in VCD or SVCD style.
because I Tried and said i must insert a CD-RW disc

to convert an avi to dvd-r you need to use a program like tmpgenc to convert it to an mpg file that is dvd complient
you should use 2pass vrb total process will take between 4 to 8 hrs depending on your setup.

What was the error with TMPGEnc? I'd like to know what to look out for, though I'm sure I have seen it and can give you the answer

Well considering I know how to operate alot of software and that its pretty straight forward software, I didnt see any options or formats for .avi
You might also have a different version. I got mine off suprnova.org

3.0
To convert to DVD type format the best thing to do is this...
First open the program (big step)
Then click to start a new project and choose the files you want.
It will give you options to change things like edit parts out, etc. You probably want to leave this alone.
Then you go to the next step which is to choose the format for the files you are converting. This is done under Set Output. Personally I choose mpeg and make it into mpeg2 files as this allows for later manipulation a bit better than the DVD format.
I make them 352x240 (tv size) as what I'm doing won't be viewed at a higher resolution on a computer and I can fit more on each disc. I set my bit rate to around 1500-3500 depending on what it is and how many I want to put on the disc. Also be sure to go and soften the block noise as this will improve quality of the video overall and help with video artifacts.
I then output the file(s).
OMFG so tough to figure out!
Afterwards I use DVDLab Pro for creating menus, transitions, and creating the connections for it all.
Compile in DVDLab Pro it outputs as a Video_ts and Audio_ts folder with all the Vobs and IFO's you ever needed.
Go to Nero, choose DVD Video for the format, copy the above folders to the root of what will be the new DVD and burn it. 10-30 min later depending on your burner you have a DVD that works on most home dvd players, and computer players.
This format will allow about 14 episodes of a show or a few 2 hr movies on it. If you have an HDTV then you may want to up the resolution or play with the aspect ratio. It will also convert from/to PAL and NTSC.
