OK OK........my wife and her girlfriend are looking for winter time indoor "exercises", and they have come late to the phenomena of DDR, and want to mess around with it. (God Save Us)

She is going to buy a nice pad for the PS2 and just sent me this link of what she is buying.....

http://www.buynshop.com/productinfo/44/VG-DDR-MPD

For the novice user with more money than brains, would this be a "good" DDR pad to buy?

Any better suggestions?

On behalf of my better half, I appreciate your responses.

((Dreads the thought of drunk wife and her friends blaring Dancing Queen at 2AM while insisting that they are working out))

Probably not, from what I've heard, the metal pads break easy, but are an easy fix if you know what your doing, and are capable of soldering.

Personally, I just bought a pad they had at Electronics Boutique (this one I think,) slapped it onto a sheet of plywood cut to fit the pad, with about a half-inch of space on any side, used a staple gun, and fixed it down. Works great, have only replaced once under moderate play (maybe 6-7 hours a week, in socks.)

have to go with halfbent on this one. most metal pads that u buy from the net are kinda cheap but have a heavy price tag on em. halfbents pad rocks after you get a feel for the width of it and foot placement. Make sure to get a piece of ply that isnt warped or even remotely warped. Than you'll hear popping noise everytime you need to do fast 3 step =/ oh and dont get teh shiny plastic pads, they seem niec for foot slides, but man do they make a lot of noise and rip on the edges easily!

heh, that was the other pad, the ghetto shoestringed together garage peg-board one. but hey, it works well too! hehe

the one on the single sheet of ply rocks, gonna do the same to my ghetto one when it ain't so damn cold outside, and I get un-lazy.

Yes , MYMYbox metal pad is a nightmare. I've had to take the thing apart a million times and solder that crap. never buy mymybox. I have, though, heard fantastic ratings for the Cobalt flux. Kala ran one over with his van or something before and it still functioned fine Smile i finally got sick of soldering my metal pad. (actually I quit ddr like 6 weeks ago) Oh yea , I'de go through 1 soft pad a week too. So buying one of those isnt exactly a good solution either.

wear shoes while playing at home do we? =P

socks on the soft pads shouldn't hurt it, unless it's sliding like crazy around on a granite floor like Drevan's was. That thing is in shreds now, but it still works.

hehe, it paid its dues tho. I paid like.. what? 20 bucks for that pad and it was a nice size too! and I started having problems with it like a year after I bought it. I still have it and I'm sure with some tweaking I could get it going like new again, but his mexican is semi retired from DDR until spring hehe. Thats when tennis season starts!

As for the colbalt pads, they are awesome pads no doubt, but the 600 dollar tag on em kinda kills the hopes =( especially for poor pablos like me =*(

I say playing at home is a waste of time. Get your a*s to the arcade. It leads to more motivation and the pad is the best one. What do you have to be afraid of. I lost over 60 pounds playing DDR in 2 months. I'm not sure how I wasn't eating that much differently, I shouldn't of lost that much weight i retrospect, but I wasn't trying to either. I played maybe 1-2 sometimes 3 hours 3-5 times a week. though.

The problem with that in my area is the DDR games are always taken up by a gang of d*****s kids. They got the hair like thier fave video game characters (Spiked up and colored) and are wearing clothes that fall off thier a*s. You never get a chance to play.

play at noon-3pm, check if you have a nickel city or nickel whatever. They usually have a cover charge and have DDR. I played there all the time with no lines.

As an added bonus, it's embarassing.

Yeah, but my wife wants to take this toa new level of suburbia insanity.

She already has a Karaoke machine, and if she gets the DDR, then she and her herd of cackling geese, I mean girlfriends, can have Karaoke/DDR parties and sing and dance and lose weight, and be the subject of my ridicule.

It makes Baby Jesus chuckle.

Also, ummm, with small kids, you don't just shuffle off to the arcade for 4 hours. Wink

Weird, I went through 4 soft pads (No I wasn't wearing shoes and I am only 120 lbs !!) and they broke ... I guess playing max300 on them over and over wasnt good for them. :/ Here in WA I go to illusionz to play ... well , went to illusionz to play Razz
The place is always dead
noone is ever playing ddr and there are two extreme machines and a new version my friend is making called in the groove.

Oh yea, and when I played ddr too much (6 -8 hours on saturdays, 3 hours wednesdays and fridays).. it made me really freaking hungry. I've stopped for a bit and just did some normal exercise and lost 15 lbs lol (not all muscle im sure, I hope Razz ) been longer than 6 weeks off DDR I think , more like 7 or 8 , cant remember exactly when I quit :/

So as it made some people lose weight .. it actually made me gain :/ and my pants were tighter :/ I didn't like it :<
OH YEA, the girl on the DDR show that MTV did, Tanya - She lost like 95 lbs, I used to always see her DDRing =p Really amazing lol.

It was fun while it lasted, I'll play again some day:)
