Ok, I know I'm a bit behind the times but I finally started to play FFTactics. It had been sitting, unopened, on my bookshelf for well over a year and I finally got around to playing it this weekend. As a result, I ended up playing it until 6am on Saturday. I haven't stayed up playing a video game like that in a few years, and it was kind of refreshing. As a result, I'm on my video game kick again. I had been kind of turned off to games recently, because I simply didn't have the patience to "get into them" recently. Just didn't care about them long enough to get involved in the storylines or long enough to work up a character into a badass.

So, I'm looking for some suggestions on some good current generation RPG titles. Mind you, I only have a PS2. The only RPG's I have are Wild Arms 3(complete and utter dog shit), Suikoden 3(unopened, playing Suiko 2 first) and Final Fantasy X(crap). I'm thinking I'll get Disgaeaeaeae next. Any other suggestions?

If you end up liking Disgaea and Phantom Brave, check out La Pucelle tactics as well, its the sequel to Disgaea.
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time is pretty good, though the beginning is a bit slow
Demon Stone comes out tomorrow (9/14) and is looking pretty badass as well.

La Pucelle is its predecessor, it was released due to Disgaea's popularity.

FM4 is s****y, battles can be absurdly long, boring, and if you make one mistake, chances are, you lost a good hour or so in some stages.

Star Ocean isn't bad, but I liked Second Story more. The story screams of amalgamation; just every RPG given will be introduced in the story eventually.

Disgaea is a good time killer, has a kitschy story, and eventually becomes a quest to just make a squad of ass kickers. Fun, kitschy, but saying its repetitive is an understatement. I still pop it in the PS2 here and there.

Enjoy FFT, sans the iffy translation in some parts it's a quality game.

Don't buy Xenosaga, find a copy of Xenogears (PSX) and you'll love it.

Just going through my absurd stack of games trying to find some others to recommend.
If you can find copies of FF: Origins, Chronicals (especially this one, it has Chronotrigger on it) and Anthology, they'll keep you busy for a while...and its impossible to not like the original FF games. =P

I completely agree. I hated it, never played past the 2nd mission. The only reason I listed it is because some crazy people enjoyed it.

I've played all the old school RPG's. All the FF's up to X, Suikoden 1 and half of 2, CT, SoM, etc etc.

I'll try Disgaeae next.

Disgaea is just so addicting. I still haven't beaten it because I've spent hours upon hours leveling up weapons, armor, characters (transmogrifying them, and leveling them again.) Think I've got something like 65 hours right now. =\

FFTA was really good too, I keep going back to that, and recently started a new game with a "perfect placement" setup. Not as good as the first, but still great.

If you liked FFT, then you'll really enjoy Disgaea. In my opinion its the best RPG/Strategy game out there.

Kingdom Hearts is great, buts its really short and pretty easy. You can probably get through everything in 20-30 hours, where with Disgaea you can easily spend 80+ hours on it.

Yeah, but what you do in that 80 hours might make some people retch. In FFT you can safely get a group of six bad asses in not too much play time, meanwhile enjoying a tolerably refreshing story when played for the first time. In Disgaea to do that takes a lot more work, minus anything serious storywise, plus kitschiness.

A la Cave of Ordeals level 3, anyone with a 3x3, give them the item resident for the 300% xp bonus, rinse and repeat, transmigrate, rinse and repeat. Otherwise, Disgaea is a really short game unless you maximize its potential; you can get through the episodes fast as hell, especially if you stop over in some of the ones with XP bonus or invuln panels, dark assembly to level the enemies up, then delevel the enemies (easiest vote in the game to get) and carry on with the game.

How can you say Kingdom Hearts is easy? Disgaea rquires no skill at all it's just a time investment, that's not difficulty. KH has some pretty hard side bosses too, its more fun, go get that, these guys are morons here.

Boy you sure are quick to speak about people being morons when they are simply voicing their opinion. I never said that Disagea was difficult, its easy as well. Whenever I bought Disgaea I expected it to be easy, when I picked up Kingdom Hearts, I expected some sort of challenge, but was disappointed in that regard. Thats why I mentioned that. Both are great games and are on my favorites list.

Just because someone else has a different view than you do on a subject doesn't make them ignorant. Open up your mind a little.

You sure as f**k didn't try the optional bosses if you thought there was no challenge.

Actually I did. Sephiroth wasn't too hard once you got his timing down, especially with Sin Harvest. Kurt Zisa had me confused for a good five, ten minutes, because I really didn't know how to damage him when he was spinning around like a maniac, but still managed to kill him on my first try. The Phantom was about like Sephiroth, just had to take some time to get timing right. The only thing that I didn't do in Kingdom Hearts was to get all the gummi blocks. I didn't beat Sephiroth and the Phantom on my first tries, but it didn't take too long. I'm not bragging, I just didn't think it was that hard really.

My mind is open. Just not for wrong opinions. KH is as hard as any game out there ATM except DDR and Ninja Gaiden, especially the optional bosses, what else is there to discuss?, you were wrong.

A couple months yet, and unfortunately I heard it's really not that good. They use the same battle system but there is virtually nothing past a rare 3 hit combo and it is a much more technical slower paced fighting game.

I LOVED samurai showdown as far as characters and the concept goes, but even I have to agree the gameplay was always kind of wierd and not quite great. I'm sure Ill prolly still buy it though.

Haha, seeing someone pull off Haohmaru's s.FP in CVS2 was always funny. You pretty much have to use P or K and parry or JD (respectively), even then whatever you JD'd (3 frames adv.) or parried (6 frames adv.) would have to have s****y, s****y recovery.

Sad thing is, it's probably just a little more damaging than Sagat's s.RH, which is wholly applicable in most all situations you'd face.

But, shit, that's CVS2. Haohmaru didn't translate too well to say the least.

Yeah, I totally suck at DDR. I started up 2 months ago and only bought myself a soft pad so far. Have you heard what tracks are going to be on DDR Extreme for PS2? I know its main premise is to incorporate the EyeToy, but I'm hoping it has some decent tracks on it as well. I've only got MAX2, still need MAX1.

Oh, also, are any of the PSX DDR games worth buying?

Baldurs Gate 2
anachronox
Neverwinter nights Hordes of the Underdark
Starwars Knights of the Old republic

BG2 is really involved with great characters and a really long involved story.
Anachronox is a science fiction RPG with great graphics, a killer combat systems and features the grossest most sickest scene youll ever laugh your ass off in gaming history.
Heres a hint "Something Chewy"
Hordes of the Underdark is good old fashiened RA salvatore styled kick ass story that involves some really good character development both plotwise and dynamic wise.

Knights of the Old republic is an amazing game.
Probably one of the best stories ever told in a pc RPG (maybe because it was designed by the BG2 team) and some of the coolest light side/dark side powers and development Ive seen.
And the teammate you can take with you are very fleshed out.
Take the homicidal combat driod as one of your teammates and see what I mean.
all these games are guaranteed not to disappoint
