1, Tipping - recognise a minimum wage already. don't expect the customer to pay more because employers don't have the decency to pay what people need to live on. A tip stops being a tip when it's demanded, required.
2, Currency - Your money sucks, it's boring. One colour all the same size and feels like monopoly money.
Another thing, it's too f*****g hot over there, 50+ days at over 90? f**k that
I'm sure there's more but I'm already recovering from the trauma.

Yeah, since they instituted the National Weather Equalizer things have been pretty boring. I liked the old days better, where weather varied from place to place.

I remembered something else!
Who thought up the retarded f*****g idea of putting commerials 10 seconds from the end of a tv program, I'm there watching Smallville, Will & Grace, Friends, whatever... almost to the end of the episode and the adverts come on.... The adverts finish only to show the end credits of said program. wtf?

Commercials suck in general. My favorites are when they have 5 minutes of show then an equal length of commercials.

NONE of the provinces or territories but Quebec speak it as their primary language. Because you have spanish speaking people who live all over America, I guess that makes it the primary language spoken.
You are a genuinely stupid f**k.

Take a look at the bill at any european restaurand and cafe and you'll notice a "15% gratitude included" (usually you also find it on the menu)
In the US that tip isn't included, giving you the option of NOT giving any tip for bad service. If you don't tip in europe, you still tipped 15% - also it is usually expected that you tip something ON TOP of those 15%.

Short of paying for coffee and other small stuff every country uses plastic... who cares if the $10 and $20 bills look the same :p

Not where I've eaten, when I tip or don't tip it's because of the service I get, not because it's expected.

15% tip is included in the price everywhere in europe. Not tipping anything in europe equals a 15% tip.

It's an official language. Spanish is NOT an official language of the USA

Essentially, the VAT is just a federal tax - though in most EU countries it is MUCH higher than in the US. (usually around 15%)
Say someone produces goods worth $500. The government puts a 10% (using this just as an example - it differs from country to country or even from service to service... Switzerland alone has 4 different VAT rates) VAT on it and the company selling the goods, of course, passes that on to their client. The client pays $550.
They now continue to work with the goods and manufacture them into something else, which is now worth $1000. "Value added" is $500, so the company would have to pay 10% on those $500 - or another $50. If they now sell it in a supermarket, they'd add $100 for every $1000 worth of goods to cover the VAT. So while the tax is calculated (and paid) at every step of the production cycle, in the end the consumer pays it all - thus it effectively is just a normal federal tax. The US federal tax on gas, for example, was $.18 on a $3.18 gas price - which would equal a VAT of 5.6%.
I think the swiss system is unique here, in that we have 4 different VAT rates - this was originally intended as a social equalizer, taxing luxury goods higher than those needed for everyday life:
7.6% covers almost everything - TVs, Phone bill, furniture, dinner at a restaurant.
3,6% Overnight stays (Hotels etc) including breakfast
2,4% medizin, food and similiar stuff.
0% some exceptions such as theaters (culture in general,) financial transactions and healthcare.
The system brings in about $15bn a year, with 7m citizens that's a rather large part of the federal budget. It's not being reworked though and likely going to be replaced with a 5.5% flat tax on everything.
There's tons of complications with the current system: Should a bottle of coke from a vending machine be charged as if it were bought in a supermarket (2,4%) or is it a restaurant? (7,6%) Current regulations: If there is a table and a chair within a few meters of the machine, it counts as a restaurant.... :p
I'm not sure what products have federal taxes in the US, but you do pay state taxes on almost everything you buy. Different name for the same beast. (from a consumer's point of view)

Hmm, I thought this was the same across europe. Everywhere I've been to (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Austria) it said "Service included" (fine, it doesn't use the word gratitude :p) - is that different in the netherlands?
Also, according to many polls, most people claim to tip 10% in restaurants, even 15% if the service was very good. (which you'd also find on "recommendation" guides) That's the percentage on the price that already includes tip. (I suppose that might not be 15% everywhere)

He brought up VAT, I explained what VAT is - the same as a federal tax. The US has federal taxes too, so it's not something annoying limited to Europe.

My first trips to the Caribbean were when I noticed the gratuity being included in the check (this was like 25 years ago). I came to the conclusion that they HAD to include the tip because the service was so g*****n awful that no one would leave a tip of their own volition....
oh, and I almost always tip 20 percent <shrug>
