Uh, no it isn't. |
Hmm, I thought this was the same across europe. Everywhere I've been to (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Austria) it said "Service included" (fine, it doesn't use the word gratitude :p) - is that different in the netherlands?
Also, according to many polls, most people claim to tip 10% in restaurants, even 15% if the service was very good. (which you'd also find on "recommendation" guides) That's the percentage on the price that already includes tip. (I suppose that might not be 15% everywhere) |
Well I dunno about the 15 % being in the price but on my restaurantbills it never says 15 % service included ever. |
Taken from Frommer's travel guide for the netherlands:
| Quote: |
Tipping-- The Dutch government requires that all taxes and service charges be included in the published prices of hotels, restaurants, cafes, discos, nightclubs, salons/barbershops, and sightseeing companies. Even taxi fare includes taxes and a standard 15% service charge. To be absolutely sure in a restaurant, for example, that tax and service are included, look for the words inclusief BTW en service (BTW is the abbreviation for the Dutch words that mean value-added tax), or ask the waiter. The Dutch are so accustomed to having these charges included that many restaurants have stopped spelling it out. Tips for extra service are always appreciated but not necessary.
Dutch waiters and hotel staff often conveniently "forget" that a service charge and a tip are in effect the same thing. If you query them on this, they'll likely tell you a tip is not included in the bill -- true, since it's not called a tip but a service charge. The customer pays 15% service (in most restaurants) whether they liked the service or not. Most Dutch people either don't add a further tip at all, or they leave a minimal amount. Being human, waitstaff and other service personnel do appreciate tips. They know that foreigners often leave generous ones, and they want to encourage this practice.

Well that explains it.
I usually leave a small tip (1- 3 euros) if I liked the food & service. If someone is being a total b***h I don't leave anything.

quote whatever you like, but i've lived in the netherlands for 25 years and travelled all around europe during that time.
Only in a VERY small minority of restaurants (mostly expensive ones) they put a gratuity in the menu. 9 out of 10 times that only counts if you go with group of 10 or more people.
I have never had to pay 15% anywhere i've eaten. Tips are always optional.
the only % you get on the bill is the tax, but thats kinda different then the US.
For example in CA you always have the non-taxed price of items on a bill, and add 9% tax AFTER you put it on the counter (confusing as f**k).
In holland any price you see has the 19% (yes it's insane ) tax on it so you always knwo before hand what you will have to pay.
In other words, the US is worse tip wise then europe by far.
Mostly because if in europe you dont leave a tip they usually dont come running after you and cussing you out

Aviger has reminded me of another annoying thing, the fact that price you're looking at on an item isnt the price you've got to pay, what a f*****g retarded concept.
UK VAT is 17.5%, it's included in the price so you know what you're paying.
Walking around looking for crap to buy I would find something at a decent price and think about buying it, then remember that tax wasn't included and it suddently wasn't so decent. f*****g stupid system.

ya but, I'd rather not see sales tax and pay 6% then see the tax already and pay 17.5%. Keep your tea!

Second, sure IT IS an official language, but I honestly don't care what you say, barely anyone speaks french compared to english here. (Come live here and find out)
Third, I was being sarcastic about the spanish thing you j*****s.

While I was driving upstate yesterday (in Arkansas) I was punching radio buttons like mad, trying to find some music. I'm using a State car, so no CD player for me!
I found Christian stations...and Arkansas football..and that was about it. But what was funny was that the Christian stations were playing something like soap operas....but about religious issues. They had actors reading parts and stuff, and the lame music that old-time radio soaps used to have....one of them was about a girl wanting to say a prayer at her graduation ceremony--she was valedictorian--but the principle giving her a generic "prayer" to read instead. The conflict ensued for the girl, blah blah...I chose silence instead of radio :p
That's gotta be USA only culture!

A) I dont care where you live.
If you can afford to eat at a restaurant or order delivery food or even a cup of coffee at a shit hole waffle joint, your ass can afford to tip or you can get that shit and serve yourself.
When you go to a restaurant or order in, you are not just paying for food, you are paying for a service.
Even if they make minimum wage, well, guess what, thats not enough to live on.
B) Its our custom to tip our wait staff and honestly unless the service is s****y, you are s****y if you dont tip. A lot of people in the US will straight up judge people by how they treat the wait staff, especially women on dates etc.
That being said, I will completely agree that if the service is crap you should not tip. If the food is crap but the service is good, you tip your waitress and get a manager to take the food off the bill, which they will do 99% of the time.
f**k me if Im wrong but dont American restaurants have unusually large portions of food for the price, hence why we are so fat?
Or is it because our food is not blandsville?

Saying that tip and "service included" is the same is just stupid.
Tip is something extra you give if you are satisfied with the waiter.
"Service included" doesn't mean you actually get charged extra for the service, but more like you are not allowed to charge extra for service. This doesnt mean the employees gets this fee as extra tax free payment.
