Crack me up. We have this aggressive firewall that "learns" and "adapts" to new types of websites. It lets you log into it once, then it surveys the site and makes a decision on whether or not to ban it. When you access a banned website it will give you a message saying what type of website it has blocked and why.
First it banned x-rated sites with the warning "Explicit" or "Pornography"
Then it banned sites like craigslist with the warning "Personals"
Then it banned sites like chat.yahoo.com or gay.com with the warning "Chat"
Then it went and banned the WoW and the SWG forums site with a warning "Games"
Then it went and banned gmail.com with the warning "Webmail" (really, really p****d me off)
and today was the icing on the cake. I was looking at theonion.com and what comes up but a warning stating "Humor"
It's only a matter of time before it bans me from Realpoor  I have nothing left

Actually the only thing that really annoyed me was the webmail thing. Apart from that I thought it was funny that a firewall is now banning "Humor". That was really the point, here.

I wish I could.. we're on a locked down environment. Don't have admin rights on the machine, can't SSH and there are no analog phone lines in the building either.

Do what I do: run sshd on port 443 (or 80 if the isp allows it and you don't need it) on the home box. Email yourself putty.jpg then rename it to putty.exe. SSH tunnel to proxy. AIM can work over http proxy but you may find something like command-line naim more useful in that situation, though I had 4 or 5 names banned using naim when AOL went berserk banning people for using non-AOL clients. Though I guess if this filter is as anal as you say, it may try to crawl port 443 on that box and get no response and then block it.

Now that's something I hadn't thought of. It's really not that big of a deal, in any event. It's certainly not something I'm going to get upset over, like Finigan said it's not what they pay me to do. If I can get away with it, fine, if I can't I won't fight it.
It just made me laugh when I saw that the f*****g firewall was banning "Humor"

I was f*****g outraged when I found out realpoor, sa, gmail and webmail.us are ALL banned at my new job.
At least they allow mail.yahoo.com. I just wish yahoo offered the threaded e-mail views that gmail does.

i use a proxy at work to get around url's with chat and radio and streaming in them. just use a public proxy, access the url you need, then turn the proxy off.

Thats stupid. Banning webmail is just going to encorage people to use their work email for personal crap. That in turn is going to increase the ammount of spam that is sent to the corperate mailbox.
