|

My speakers are dying and I want to get a really nice speaker set to replace them. What kind of speakers are really good? I have a Creative Soundblaster Live! Value soundcard and I don't know if that is good or not.
If I'm getting real nice speakers is my soundcard good enough or do I need to get a better one?
thanks

I agree with the Sennheiser statement, just got some headphones made by them and they kick ass.

if you want a 5.1 system, i'd agree. i'd recomend getting the Audigy 2 also for a sound card, unless you already have the live 5.1 or the audigy 1

For the amount of money the Logitechs are, go with Klipsch and their Promedia 5.1 Ultra system.

Compared to the Logitech line, it's like listening to a pair of Sony Walkman headphones and then putting on some Sennheiser HD50s. The bass response and frequency range is amazing - why go for one sub when you can have two? The max volume is ear-splittingly loud.
I use mine for studio monitoring and mastering, and they have the definition and transparency for not only stereo mastering/EQing but doing 5.1 surround mixing. This translates over to f*****g amazing gaming, especially Max Payne 2 and such. I would recommend these speakers to anyone.

Without a doubt. A good part of the mids on the Logis is muddy as hell, and after listening to the Klipsches the bass sounds weak and tapered.

Don't take my word, listen to them yourself. Find a place you can demo both sets if possible, I'd be interested to hear your personal opinion.

clev, i think the live would power them fine for just normal music listening. but spit seems to be more up-to-date on this stuff. if i'm never not really busy at work, i'll try to test em out. we have both units.

I did film mastering for a little bit, and worked on a few semi-high profile albums for an independent studio under BMG. Lately it's been mostly acoustic fingerstyle/flatpicking and acoustic bass tracking with a bit of vocals.
Not that any of that means anything to your empty little head, f****t.

but do i really need to pay for a 7.1 card if speakers are only 5.1?
and how do you think the
Klipsch Promedia GMX D-5.1 Personal Audio System
would compare to that $400 setup you linked

Technically no, but in case you ever wanted to add a stereo pair and bump it up to 7.1 it's nice to have. It's also really hard to find a good, warrantied/supported (important!) 5.1 card and there's nearly always no price difference between 5.1/7.1.

Well, I haven't heard that set so I don't have any recommendations on it. I did notice it's definately less wattage and they use some lesser tweets in the configuration than the full ultra setup. You're also changing from twin 8" long throw woofers to a single 6.5" sub. I would assume it's still the same quality and features that Klipsch is notorious for though and the price is definately right.
