I'm putting together a list of parts for a new computer for my girlfriend, but I'm not quite sure about how some of the slots/compatibilities work.
Can I put a hard drive with a IDE UltraATA133 on a motherboard with UltraDMA133?

What's a good core speed and effective memory speed for a 128meg video card?

Are you still wearing that stupid sweat band?
These are the issues you need to address before even thinking about computers.

See that's what I don't get. If you don't know what a good core speed and effective memory speed is, and the difference between the two is.. why are you even worrying about this?

That completely varies on the video card itself. Which card is it and are you refering to overclocking or what? heh. Speeds different from each card and company..
Take for instance, the 2 new chipsets that just came out. ATi x800 and Geforce 6800.
the X800XT runs at 520mhz whereas the Geforce 6800 Ultra runs at 400.
Both use DDR3 for memory and are able to achieve memory speeds in access of 1200mhz. (both of which being $500 cards.) Both cards also perferm nearly the same dispite the different core speeds at higher resolutions.
Basically what I'm saying is don't worry about what the core speed/memory speed is unless you plan on overclocking, and since your asking "what a good core/memory speed" is in the first place I'm assuming your not planning on overclocking! And since the computer is for your girlfriend, chances are she has no idea what the f**k overclocking is, so do yourself a favor and don't worry about it and go buy a cheapy fx5200 from Best Buy. If she is planning on playing games tho you can get a ATI 9800pro or Nvidia Geforce 5900xt for like $200 from some online vendors =/
