Alright

I got some issues causing me to want to take my pc swiming with me...

The pc works great after I reformat and re-install everything fresh for about 2 weeks or so.

then out of the clear blue sky... I get trouble. The trouble is

1. The damn thing will give an error message during startup. To the best of my recollection it says something like this

Checking consistency of disks .... Type of file system being checked NTFS...

Runs a bunch of 0-100% checks then it finds a list of partial files and currupt files and deletes them etc etc.

Once this happens its all down hill

2. After this happens EVERY FREAKING TIME I try to log into EQ I have to download
a. eqgame.exe
b. a crap load of .dll files
c. zone files for zones like pon and crap

3. Also after #1 when I hunt in a zone for say over an hr or so and then try to zone I get booted right out .. and in order to get back in I have to log all the way out of Eq restart patcher and redownload EQGAME.EXE

Now my question is WTF is going on with this pc.

SPECS

2.6 mhz P4
1024 ram
radeon 9200 256 VC.
cable connection

I am calling upon all of you spam posters and RP addicts... along with you occasional readers for help. Please give it a couple minutes and give me a hand.

Hard Drive? Ram? Motherboard? Conflict? ----

p.s. by the way I hvae been reformating every 2-3 weeks for almost 8 months now. Had multiple people look at the pc, and replaced the hard drive. if it is the hard drive it would have to be a second bad HD.

I'm going to take a stab at this and guess you're running Windows XP. If this is correct and you're running a large hard drive let me know. I have the fix for you sir...

Its a little known bug in NTFS with large hard drives and XP/2K flushing the buffer cache on a shutdown. It causes partition table corruption.

sounds like you have some corrupt sectors on your hard disk. run a detailed scan disk which does an actual scan of the disks surface to check for damage. i'll bet you need a new hard drive.

As I told the original poster I can't locate the original MSKB article on it, but I believe it was something like 40 gigs where the trouble starts. The fix is to use Fat32, the only advantages gained by using NTFS are security and journaling, which while a big deal aren't necessary for a home user.

There is no need for a bump. Your solution is here. It is either this vague XP "feature" or, most likely, your hard drive is turning to shit and will only get worse as time continues on.

hahah

Gee Tom, my other thought on this would be something stupid you've installed on your machine causing this, or the bad hard drive. And likely or not, but consider that just because you have a bad hard drive, replacing it if it's being caused by something else to begin with, doesn't mean that replacing the hard drive will be your solution, sir.

Considering I've done tech support for the last 10 years must not mean a damn thing, regardless of what the "12 year olds" here trying to help your stupid ass, doesn't seem to be the correct course of action. It appears to me that it is indeed the fact. You can take my original post as rude, but I can assure you, Mr.PointOutTheObvious Dickhead, it was not being rude. Like this reply is, and please take it as such.

If you do require a more technical answer, I'd be happy to hook you up there. However, I don't think that's necessary now, do you?

Yup, you sure did. Thus my reply above. But since it was choice, I'll leave it here.

As I am an a*****e like that. Take it as you will. Get over it or not, I'll be nice or rude to whomever, depending on how they blurt things out.

try -

boot Windows and run chkdsk with the /f (fix errors) command line option. If chkdsk asks you about if it should check the drive the next time you restart the computer then answer 'y' (yes) and restart Windows. If you don't specify the /f option then chkdsk will not fix the NTFS consistency problems.

also it would greatly help if you wrote down the exact error message

do a step-by-step boot sequence and see which command it returns the error on

keywords are great but if you are getting an error - any good tech has you recreate the problem and write it down

XP has issues with drives over 130GB (it's some technical number, but close to that). The space is there but it doesn't register correctly with FAT. Problem was fixed with SP1.

another advantage NTFS has over FAT32 iirc is in FAT32 there is a 2gig or so file size limit. But I could be speeking out of my ass.
