Few days ago I was hit by a virus. Backdoor somtething or another. I only noticed it because I was unable to access certain websites and my lotus notes server in San Antonio.
I reinstalled XP but I cannot reverse the change that is blocking those sites. I removed the file and made the changes to the registry IAW symantec instruction.
I still cannot go to microsoft.com or the lotus server. Otherwise, I can surf the net just fine. It preventing me from registering XP, updating XP and MSIE as well as blocking me from the LN server I so need to work off of this weekend.
I was unable to get XP set up to fdisk C: before installing. So its not a perfectly clean install.
Any suggestions? Anyone ever had this problem before?
Ciao,

Heheh, might have been the prawn.. I'd settle for th ability to fdisk and do a clean install but xp is being s****y. I'll call microsoft tomorrow and see if a tech can come up with a solution.
The system checks out clean.
I used the XP repair tool thingy and made a new MBR, and a fe wother possible tweeks..
Still cannot go to register windows, or update anything microsoft, or use lotus notes.
I'm wondering if the bug managed to swap port usage around, but I'm not savy enough to know how to check..

Will not reformat because there were set up files on that drive.
Soo, I thought, ok, I'll just install everything off the CD and forget about dumping set up on it.
That didn't work either.
Bleh..
Its just wierd as shit..
I can surf just about anywhere there are quite a few places off limits from this but what is most important is microsoft and that domino server in Fort Sam Houston Texas.

If I remember right, you can use Partition Magic to wipe the drive. Then just reinstall Win XP as normal.

I bet somebody edited your hosts file and told microsoft.com to resolve to 127.0.0.1 or something.
I did that to a friend of mine, boy did that p**s him off. He didn't find out how to fix it for about three weeks.

Thanks for the replies. Got it to fdisk and reinstalled.. oddly, the problem is still there.
I can sure but not hit any microsoft site.
Going to try and install lotus notes again.

In the event this is true, how would check it, and if need be, reverse it?

search all files and folders (including hidden) for "host"
you'll find it, look in it and you see like:
127.0.0.0 localhost #localhost
if they messed with it you will see something like:
127.0.0.0 www.microsoft.com #microsoft
that means going to microsoft.com goes nowhere. to fix it, delete the bogus line and save changes
