On Wednesday, November 17, 2004, the Financial Services department was the victim of a break and enter that resulted in the theft of three laptop computers. One of these computers contained information related to the preparation of tax reporting data for 1098-T Educational Expenditure reporting to the Internal Revenue Service. We are notifying all of our students, who took a class during 2004 because your name, address and social security number was included in this file. GRCC password protects all of this information but we are concerned about the potential for a hacker securing any financial information regarding your accounts. We apologize for this breach of data security and the inconvenience that it may cause you.
At this time, Campus Police is investigating the incident; attempting to find the computers and determine whether the data on the computers was jeopardized.
For your information and convenience we are including the web site for the Federal Trade Commission Identity theft page (http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/ ) which contains valuable information regarding precautions you may want to take to protect your interests. One recommendation that the FTC suggests is that you contact one of the three major credit bureaus to put a fraud alert on your credit file. This contact information is available on the website listed above.
Again, we are very sorry that this has occurred and are doing everything possible to locate the computers. We would also reiterate that we are unsure as to whether the data contained on the computer has been jeopardized; however, we wanted to notify you so that you could take the appropriate action to protect your identity.
