I think the future lies with sandbox MMO's (Second Life) integrated with competitive gameplay (WoW, GW, LOTRO, EVE etc..). The one i can highlight is Darkfall:

Trailer should explain everything. People are tired of games where they feel insignificant with mediocre crafting systems, flavour of the month PvP systems, long hours needed to keep up in PvE and lack of a real sense of a place in the world. I see this game as a marker for the next generation of games and a set standard for MMO's.
