Okay, ive been starting my visits (and am visiting 4 more colleges this weekend), but i was wondering if any of you know anything about some of the colleges that im considering (or maybe even have gone to them).

Okay, my ever-changing-list currently consists of:

Penn State (maybe schreyers)
University of Delaware honors
University of Pittsburgh honors
Johns Hopkins University
American University
University of Virginia
James Madison
Davidson (dont know as much about this one as the rest)

There are others, but these were the first ones that came to mind. Basically, I'm somewhat undecided- kind of at a toss up between: Neuroscience (most of these schools have it- and this is the major im leaning toward atm), Economics (in which case i would probably end up being a professor), some branch of international studies (except there's no money in it Sad), biology, or pre-law(though i doubt i would major in pre-law.. more likely i would major in something else.. probably science related.. with a few law courses on the side to prepare me for the LSATs, and then try to get into law school). Other than that, money is an issue, which will probably cut UVA, Davidson, American, and JHU off of the list. The other issue is just getting into those four (and schreyers)- my SATs arent bad, but they arent great either- so even if i got into these four it would probably be barely(1320, which ill try to bring up if i can in October, and 30 ACT...3.9ish GPA... a gazillion clubs/volunteer stuff/etc).

Anyway, was just wondering if anyone had any info about the colleges on my maybe-list ,colleges that i should consider in addition, or perhaps had any advice for finding/choosing colleges.

Pretty solid scores...

I don't know about the U's you've asked about though except I've heard JHU is great but I don't have anything to base it on...

one of my friends went to penn state he likes it, i applied to american university but they rejected me because they suck and are f**s so dont go there... i know a girl at john hopkins too apparently its a good school. Theres some money in international studies, you arent gonna be a pauper if you do it, seems most of the people who do it end up going into journalism or something similar.

As for your scores they are prolly high enough to get you into any of those schools, 1320 SAT is above average in all but the hardest schools... dunno about acct tho cause i never took um so never paid attention to numbers for it ;p

Econ, along with some math and accounting, can get you into a finance position, if you're into that.

You don't need to take pre-law, if there is such a major, to get into law school. In fact, it'd probably help if you majored in something other than the traditional pre-law majors (English, history, soc) They like to see some writing classes, though. Law school's all about your GPA and LSAT score. Also, LSATs don't test you on law. They test you on reading comprehension, logic puzzles, and the like. It's similar to the SAT verbal.

If you're thinking of law, try reading some court opinons. If you like reading them, then law's a good match for you, because it's what you're going to be staring at for the rest of your life.

There are many towns in the United States with populations smaller than the undergraduate count at PSU, so it's not surprising that "you will find almost every type of student you can imagine here." While "the majority are white and middle class, there are also thousands of international students here from countries such as China, India, and Japan, and a large African American population as well." The diversity leads one student to conclude, "If a student complains about not having any friends at Penn State, they are just antisocial." While undergraduates come in all shapes, shades, and sizes, the archetypal Nittany Lion is "white, in good shape, into the party scene, preppy or a jock, and pretty all-American." Most students agree that "students of different races don't interact often. It's not because they don't want to or are rude to one another, they just don't tend to mix all that much."

The Fightin' Blue Hens are a spirited community with the mix of academics, campus activities, and athletics that fit the profile of a national university. UD supports 23 varsity sports, 11 men's and 12 women's, all NCAA Division I members of the Colonial Athletic Association, except for the football team, which is a Division I-AA member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. More than half of the undergraduate body participates in intramurals, varsity, club, band, cheerleading, or other sports.

In addition to athletics, the University is home to more than 200 campus organizations covering a spectrum of interests and communities. Visit the Web at www.udel.edu/RSO/ for a complete list. The UD undergraduate experience begins with DelaWorld 101, the summer and fall orientation program for new students. Annual events on the green grass of the Mall, at the Bob Carpenter Center, in theatres across campus, and in the Trabant University or Perkins Student Centers keep students entertained and active. Delaware students fill their free time with movie nights; Mallstock; and concerts and performances such as Chris Rock, Tori Amos, LIVE, the Goo Goo Dolls, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Alanis Morissette. In addition, there are 38 Greek letter organizations, including 17 NIC fraternities, 11 NPC sororities, and 5 National PanHellenic Council chapters (traditionally African-American membership).

The 18,000 undergraduate students attending Pitt form "a diverse group of students that, from what I have seen, interact easily and on a regular basis." One student observes, "We are amazingly diverse, and everyone is not only respectful, but also curious and excited to learn about and meet new people." Other respondents report that "people of the same ethnic group or background usually hang together." Even with approximately 14 percent of the student body members of minorities, one student points out, "Unfortunately, that is low for a city school." The minority populations organize effectively, in groups including the Black Action Society, Rainbow Alliance, and Asian Students Alliance. Amid this "wide spectrum of students" with a "broad range of interests," most are "friendly, outgoing, involved, motivated, and responsible." Most people seem to find their niche among "academically focused and open-minded" peers.

A typical student who chooses Johns Hopkins might be described as "overly ambitious," "introverted," and "hardworking." To some people, the assortment of "too many weirdos" that makes up the student body displays "little personality." A few students accuse their group of peers, in general, of being "ruled too much by their parents' wishes." On the other hand, one student tells us, "People surprise me (in a good way) every day." Even if "kids could be cooler," respondents agree that "most are good people" and "everyone tends to work together." Accusations of blandness aren't universal; some students boast that "everyone here has done interesting things." While many students say, "We all get along," the population seems to "lack of a sense of unified community," and at times "cultural barriers are very hard to break through."

American University

The "idealistic, smart, concerned" students at American University are "extremely politically involved. People here are passionate about various issues, due in no small part to our location." Most are to the left end of the political spectrum; one disaffected undergrad writes, "The typical student is a liberal tree-hugger who thinks he/she has an open mind but actually doesn't." A large international population ("lots of diplomats' kids"), along with smaller minority populations, engenders a diversity that is "wonderful; it makes political science classes quite invigorating!" When we asked what the typical American student was like, we typically got one of two responses. Some balked at the request: "This school is way too diverse to pinpoint the typical student," while others described a white kid from the "middle to upper middle class, interested in international relations, likes trying new things, [and] interested in community service."

Virginia has long had a reputation as a preppy haven, a reputation students tell us is well deserved. "UVA is quite a preppy, well-to-do school," writes one undergrad. "It's the perfect school for frat boys who like to wear Gucci shoes and sorority girls who dig Versace." Not everyone fits the mold; explains one student, "Upon closer inspection, you'll realize that the student population includes people of all walks of life." The student body has its share of "gun-toting, abortion-hating, Confederacy-loving students; insane-worker, dedicated-to-a-fault, anal-about-cleanliness students; and 'eccentric to a point that begs the question not of whether, but of when they'll be committed' students." Although fairly diverse, "UVA is very segregated. Different ethnic groups do not mix very much, and the Greek population is an entity unto [itself]." Political activism "is not big at the university at all. The student body is largely more conservative-leaning, and the flaming liberals don't have too much of an impact of student life."

The "active, open, and friendly" students of JMU strike newcomers with an "overwhelming feeling of niceness. Everyone smiles at you and everyone holds doors. Even the cafeteria ladies seem to brighten your day a little." Students report that "it is not cutthroat competitive like other schools. People compete, but it is not at the expense of others. Groups tend to work out, with students complementing each others strengths." Since "most everyone in the student body is from Virginia," "a southern gentility" pervades the campus. Students admit that "different races and ethnicities are very separate. It's not that they don't get along with each other or hate each other—there just isn't a lot of interaction."

Davidson

Davidson students lead well-balanced lives, through opportunities to be involved daily in a myriad of activities that reflect a diversity of interests and talents. By participating in more than 100 campus organizations, students can influence college policy and campus life, organize campus events, and promote social causes and multicultural interests.

Knobloch Campus Center (Alvarez College Union & Duke Family Performance Hall) opened in spring 2001, and has quickly become the focal point of campus social and cultural life. Inside the center, Alvarez College Union houses a caf? and grill, convenience store, the campus bookstore, a full-service U.S. Post Office, a fitness center, and the Smith 900 Room, a venue for concerts, lectures, and socials. Alvarez is also home to student government offices; The Davidsonian and Libertas publications; the Career Services office; and Davidson Outdoors, which sponsors excursions throughout the year to sites like the Florida Everglades and the Rio Grande. Knobloch also houses the critically acclaimed Duke Family Performance Hall, which opened in winter 2002 with a residency and performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The other important center of social life on campus is Patterson Court. Six national fraternities, three women's eating houses, a coed eating house, and the Black Student Coalition are located on Patterson Court. Each house has both dining and social facilities, and serves as a place where members eat meals and socialize. In addition to sponsoring large and small parties open to the entire campus community, members of each house are actively involved in a variety of community service projects. Davidson has a strong tradition of contributing to the local community through service projects. More than 800 students each year get involved in community outreach programs in Davidson and the greater Charlotte community.

Davidson offers a range of athletic programs for serious athletes or just for fun. Approximately 85 percent of students participate in intramural or club sports, and about 25 percent play on one of the varsity teams, which average about a 50 percent walk-on rate. As one of the smallest colleges competing in the Division I of the NCAA, Davidson enrolls true scholar-athletes to play 11 different varsity sports for men and 10 for women.

Nontraditional is perhaps the best way to describe the student body at UNLV. The average undergrad here is around 25, and many students commute to campus. Some students praise the diversity of the undergrad population while others would like to see "more ethnicity." One of the reasons that students may not appreciate the campus's multicultural makeup is that "students never get together at this university." "Small cliques" plaster the landscape, often separated according to race, Greek letters/GDIs, or friends from the area who knew each other before coming to UNLV. As a result, one hotel management major describes the university as "more of a tossed salad than a melting pot." Still, the general feeling is that this is an "awesome," "laid-back" group that, as a whole, can be "friendly, popular, smart, witty, funny."

Just sent my little brother off to somewhere in North Dakota where he's gonna freeze his ass off soon, so I was able to steal some info from his college review crap.

Anyways, good luck you're gonna do fine!!!

Haha, that's awesome. I scored the highest in my class (34 - which is low for a high) and only had a 3.6. The guys with 4.0+ were like 'WTF?'

Anyhew... Hunny, I noticed your comment about there being no money in one of your choices of studies. Let me warn you that money is quite scarce in the sciences too until you've got many years in and a few degrees hanging on the wall. Hell, many entry level post-doc positions still start under $30,000. Don't take out too many loans, and don't get frustrated when your engineer friends are making twice what you are out of the gate. My feeling on college, career and money is s***w the money. You can't possibly see far enough in the future to know what's going to pay well 5, 10, 20 years out anyway; you're more likely to be influenced by trends and make the same mistake everyone else is making. And if you pick a path based on money, you may not really like it.

Study what you're interested in, and the money will come. And even if it doesn't, at least you'll be happy.

I agree with you, Sin. Just passing along what my career counselor said and what I've experienced so far.

'Are you interested in engineering?'
'Not really'
'Ok, I'll cross that out. Are you interested in making alot of money'
'That's not really important to me'
'Ok, 'cause if you said yes, I was going to have to circle engineering again.'

I still remember that conversation like it was yesterday lol.

=D as a first job.. i think it's wonderful.. i mean, i've got a full time job, and i'm making more money than 90% of everyone else's first job.. with the notable exceptions of those child geniuses who've developed things like the mosquito buoy.. which bobs up and down and sends an ultrasonic ripple throughout a puddle of still water which ruptures mosquito eggs =p..

Besides, aloo, how can your work ethic let you stand around and chat.. while getting paid for it.. i actually can't let myself take breaks longer than i'm allowed, and lunches longer than i'm allowed =p

Don't worry too much about how much a school is going to cost while you're applying. I got into five schools, three public, two private. The two instate public schools gave me awful financial aid packages. One private school gave me a great package, including a 50k scholarship. But I ended up taking a full scholarship to an out of state public school (U. of Maryland, Baltimore County).

If money is going to be an issue, do make sure to fill out your forms in time and such, and remember that some schools (especially private schools) require extra forms to fill out.

You don't have to visit every school now. Four schools in two days seems to be rushing it. Visit some now, of course, but there's always time after applications to visit schools as well.

Less than 1% of millionaires in the United States are millionaires because of a wage they are paid....just something to think about.
