I always loved the 90's, the pop music was great to listen and dance to. When rap music began being numero uno around 1999 or so, I just couldn't deal very well with that kind of dancing style (grinding) and violent lyrics. So I actually began listening to classic rock and have found that genre to be my favorite still to this day. Although I like music such as punk rock, techno, and other various pop songs as well. My favorite modern bands include Rise Against and Disturbed. Rap still fills the college atmosphere especially at the clubs, and so I have to deal with it constantly. Concerts, however, have been my ticket out. I've seen bands like Aerosmith, Styx, Queen (with Paul Rogers as lead vocal), REO Speedwagon, Survivor, Kiss, Billy Joel, etc and got to say I don't believe a rapper live could be nearly as good. Of course I am a little biased and have not even seen a true rapper live. So please feel free to give your opinion and tell me what you think.

Rap has it's place ... I'm older than you (based on the dates you posted, it's an assumption I'm pretty sure is accurate =p), and I was listening to the "original" rap back in the early to mid 80's (original mainstream; I think rap officially was born in the late 70's, but that bit of trivia currently escapes me).
What I used to listen to was early RunDMC, Beastie Boys, YoungMC and the less tame stuff like NWA, Too $hort, Luke Skywalker and the 2Live Crew ... perhaps the most talented, imo, was Sir Mix-A-Lot ... some of his old stuff like Buttermilk Biscuits, Posse's On Broadway, Square Dance Wrap, were fun, inventive and took a lot more skill to mix than today's super-computer mixed crap.
HOWEVER, that being said, the best they had to offer won't scratch the surface of the skill of bands like Boston, Bad Company, Queensryche, Tesla, Warrant (they rock!), or even Fleetwood Mac ... and in concert, KISS > all ...
