A friend of mine is having a problem with a router where he cannot get it to give a response in hyperterminal. Any suggestions?
Just for reference this is what he's trying to do basically.

He's trying to change the password, yes?
Make sure the baud rate is correct. Make sure he knows how to use hyperterminal (ie he has his console cable attached to the COM port correctly etc)
Otherwise, the only thing I see wrong in the instructions is that I think the conf reg is wrong.
Here are the instructions straight from Cisco for the 2600 series router.
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_2600.shtml
I don't have one handy or I'd type them out myself. We only have 2500's in the lab at the moment, and I dont think the company wants me rebooting our production router at the moment

If there is one thing in this world that i hate more than router techs, it's router techs who don't know what they're doing.

I used to work the long haul telco side of all that for a long time. Did from t1 copper wire to oc3's coming in on fiber, also did the frame relay portion in the big cascade switches.
A router tech who didn't know thier own equipment made life an absolute hell =)

Are you sure of a couple of things? Do you have the blue Cisco console cable which is nothing more then a rollover cable? Do you have the serial connector for your laptop/PC that has the Cisco pinouts? You should be able to get in with 9600/8/None/1 for the Hyperterm settings. If thats not working, run down to Radio shack and you should be able to get a naked 9 pin db female to RJ45 lemme know if you need the pinout diagram for it.
I think the config reg for password recovery is 2142 IIRC or thats the normal boot one I can't remember 100% heh.
[edit]
Just checked the Cisco website and 0x2142 is the password recovery config register =) I knew I wasn't smoking crizzack.

I was missing the roll over cable and the pin out on the RJ45->DB9 adapter were wrong.. so yay.. found a nice diagram for an admin who was sick of going to a site with 5 different cables..

Worked plenty of time with the 600 and 900 series ciscos so I knew it wasn't the terminal.. but I still may be on crack..
