Woah! an actor can play a coffee company? Sweet dude, I want to play McDonalds in a movie.

That was one of the most retarded comments i've seen on this board.

I forget which book, I think from the fourth or fifth books on are actually written by his son. After the first couple the rest are basically crap anyways.

In reality, my first post was in referrence to the first novel. It was my mistake that I didn't clarify. So I never really switched topics.

Frax, I think the first six books ARE by Frank Herbert...the "prequels" that have come out in the last couple of years: House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Corrino, and one other, I think, are written by his son and a co-author.

The co-author of the prequels, Kevin Anderson, also wrote at least one of the books in one of the Star Wars cycles, too. Probably a few other books, but that's where I know his name from.

first 6 are his and the last ones done by his son were made from notes and parts of books he found and finished i think.

Kevin Anderson wrote some of the better Star Wars novels, and I THINK he wrote the Dark Empire comic book series from Dark Horse which kicked ass (or maybe he wrote the books that the comics are based off? not sure which way those went actually.)

Herbert wrote the first 6 books, the first and the last are probably the best.

Book 2 (Dune Messiah) is probably the worst, and wasn't written as a book, but as a serial in a number of different sci-fi magazines that herbert felt he was pushed into writing (which is why, in my opinion, it kinda sucks.)

Children of Dune kind of wraps up that whole mess and then Herbert gets back into the stuff I think he really wanted to write about. The series gets pretty cool again in books 4 through 6, which Chapterhouse totally owning (in my opinion).

There's SUPPOSEDLY a 90% completed by Herbert 7th book that wraps up the whole reverand matres/Bene Gesserit war and introduces the super-face changers hinted at the end of the 7th book. Herbert's son says he's going to finish it up with Anderson after they've had fun writing the pre-quels.

The Pre-quels are okay if you can put aside the fact that as literature they suck. As stars-wars-esque space opera adventure novels they're kind of neat, and fill in a lot of the details behind the history of the Dune universe, and do it pretty ably (although there are some things that disagree with the originals and annoy the hell out of me, but oh well). But they definately lack the style and artistry of the original book.

Children of Dune on Sci Fi, Sunday, March 16, 9pm, est....they say miniseries, but I am unsure how many nights it is playing.

Dune, the Sci Fi mini series is available on DVD as is the motion picture Dune.

and Bait, I did not like Sting in that role. He wasn't effeminate enough ;p

If it has more than 3 shots for Cylon ships exploding and more than two shots for whatsits exploding it will be far superior to the 70s trash.

I think Sting and the Baron were the best things about the 80s dune movie.

I HATED paul, I HATED the vocal weapon crap ("his name is a killing word!" my ass!)

I never got the sense in the books that there was anything effeminate about Feyd Ruatha, although the Baron lusting over him could certainly be argued to suggest it, given his tastes for effiminate young boys.

Their effects crew bailed on them a month into the season (same folks behind alot of the effects in the first Star Wars btw), so they were forced to recycle for the rest of the year. It did distract from the show I admit, but I also know those models will be far superior to any CGI they churn out for the new series. At this juncture I'm thinking it's impossible to make any CGI look halfway real. Voyager looked bad, B5 looked horrible, etc.

Funny i thought they he did a very good job at the paul role . certainly much better than the new one.

I forget if the vocal crap was in the books or not but in the movie i thought it was very well done . Kinda tied in with "the voice."

"the way" in the books was basically some pseudo-uber-futuristic karate-akaido sort of thing.

Herbert didn't really go into it, other than saying that Jessica was able to pin Stilgar with it then promised to teach it to the Fremen (who were already taking down Sardukar, so not exactly sure why they needed a Bene Gesserit teaching them how to fight, but whatever...).

It definately wasn't a sonic weapon.

The thing that bugged me most about both movies was how the Fremen were portrayed. In neither one do I get the sense of ruthelessness that Herbert portrays. The Fremen will do ANYTHING to protect their homes. The books talk about children fighting, women throwing their babies at the Sardukar then throwing themselves into the fight, a Fremen kamikaze's his ornithopter into a troop carrier (Stilgar says something like "40 of them for 1 of us...") ... They win fights because they fight with their all, not because of a technological advantage of sonic weapons. (I'm reminded of the line from Gattica, where they're swimming into the ocean: "I don't save anything for the swim back." THAT's what makes the Fremen excellent warriors!)

There were things I liked about both Pauls actually, but neither of them fits with what i think of as Paul from the book. Of course part of the problem is that Paul is 14(?) at the beginning of the book and 20ish when he finally leads the Fremen revolt. So seeing these 25 year old guys playing him all the way through grates on my sense of what Paul should look like right off the bat.
