Well...
Given the source material (i.e. forgiving the movies for the books faults) I thought it was pretty F'ing good. Effects were great for a made for cable movie, the sets were fantastic, acting was good, costumes were good.... was a great interpretation of the books in my humble by Herbert-worshipping opinion. I loved the guild navigator, much more in line with what I think a navigator would look like as described by herbert than that floating head in the 80s movie.
If I have a complaint it's the cheesy "ducking" maneuver of Scytale (when he morphed). Like morphing the two actors together would have been hard or expensive, jeez!
The tigers looked pretty cool, and I loved their interpretation of "the way" fighting style (even if it was a bit reminiscent of super-man TV shows).
And Riverworld looks like it's gonna be pretty cool too.

I love the costuming--wish I could afford to bid on some of them on their auction for R.I.F.
While I have read the first book a zillion times, I did not read the succeeding five more than once or twice, and that would have been many years ago. Am going to have to reread now, re-watch the series, then decide how I like it

omg if i find a woman IRL who has those eyes, i will like marry her right then and there. there are some beautiful women in this movie. plz to be sending them to my house.
on a related note, i've never really known about dune till now. been watching it with a friend who is a fan of the series and after watching this series, i'm really interested in it. looks like it kicks ass.

I really liked both of the recent series, but felt that if ya hadnt read and remembered the books, you prolly wouldnt understand half of whats going on in them. But since Sci Fi books have always been my passion, and Dune one of my favorite series, I thought it was a pretty good interpretation.
A couple of years ago Brian Herbert, Franks son got together with Kevin Anderson and decided to do more Dune books. But what they did is write the Prequels to the original series, which tell the history of Houses Corrino, Harkonen and Atreides. Then recently they did a 4th one that goes even further back and tells the story of the Machine Intelligences and the Butlerian Jihad and if ya like Dune they are all very good.

ya, like i said, i had a friend watching the series with me kinda telling me about the history of everything ..
i'm thinking about buying a few of the books and reading them. i'm just not a big reader so i dunno if i would actually read them.

wasn't bad at all for a made for TV movie . Acting was much beter in this one than the first one sci fi channel did .
if i had paid to see it in a theater i would have been very disappointed . Biggest gripe is they should have picked someone else to play paul.

havent read the books but i really didnt care much for it, it was ok as tv movies go.i hadnt seen the "new" dune movie till it came on right before the first part of childern started, and really didnt care for it either i thought the 80s version was much better.

This Paul is the BEST Paul by far.
Paul, though, is impossible to play. In the dune book not only is he a midling teen (he's like 14 or 15 at the beginning of the book) he's also small and effeminate for his age. But then he spends 5 years hiding out with the Fremen, so you either need 2 people who look a lot alike to play him, or you say f**k it and start him off older.
The guy they got for this one I think is a good compromise. He's young enough that he could, at least on TV, be 16ish, but he's old enough to play an adult easily enough. He also has an intensity that I think is important in a Paul character, but he's charming enough to see what Chani and Irulan see in him other than power.
With the exception of Patrick Stewart as Gurney Hallek and, well, pretty much all the Harkonnens, I think this one was really well cast.
I think the thing I liked best about this series was the complexity of the characters. I was really impressed with how my feelings about, well, all of the women, changed over the course of the mini-series. I think that's the real story and strength in this series of stories, and Paul and Leto's quest for empire are just a mechanism to stir up the lives of the female characters.
Really Paul and Leto are really straightforward characters in comparison to the women characters if you think about it. Alia is so multi-faceted and complex that she's totally believable as a real person, tragic and **** and powerful and evil and caring and good all at the same time, she's probably the "main" character even though she doesn't drive the plot.

i didn't get any of the intensity or feeling of raw primal power from this paul.

Hello All,
Yeah I have to say that Dune and Children of Dune was really done well. I remember watching Dune like 3 years ago waiting for this one to come out. They did take the 2nd and 3rd book to make this Children of Dune, but still it was very well done. The actors they picked in my opion did a great job.
Oh and I think this series which was done by Sci-Fi killed the one that was done in the 80's.
