well i think it's weak, but like the article said - the incumbent only serves to lose in most debate scenarios.
and remember - bush has to know he can't talk (ad lib) his way out of a wet paper bag. I am actually suprised he is taking two...
in fact I would bet our threat level goes real high after any he "loses"
any takers?

Uh...he won the debates against Gore in 2000. And Bush agreed to 2 debates. Turning down the third was a good idea. Just look at what leftists did storming the RNC.

Sorry. My bad. I thought you said this:

in fact I would bet our threat level goes real high after any he "loses" |
When he actually won the debates against Gore. I must have misread what you said and interpreted you to mean that "bush has to know he can't talk (ad lib) his way out of a wet paper bag. I am actually suprised he is taking two...
in fact I would bet our threat level goes real high after any he "loses".
Sorry.

He wasn't the incumbent against Gore, they were both contenders.
How do you determine who "wins" a presidential debate, anyways? As far as I know there's no scoring involved. It's just the perception you walk away with.

Polling. Bush won (I think all but one) in the polling done afterwards.

This looks like the most accurate polling I have seen , sums up tons of news sources. Im too lazy to add up the margines, I added the first one up and Bush one 37 - 32.
Check out the other ones looks good because it isnt just ONE poll. Its the sum of 40 or 50 of them.

The debates are really when Bush is going to start coming out way ahead.

I would actually expect the opposite- Bush is way ahead right now, but although he's a flipflop, kerry was supposedly a decent debater at Yale (where he and Bush were both mediocre students and BOTH only got in because of their names).
It all depends on whether kerry can temporarily take "on the other hand"; "although"; "however"; "if you look at it this way..." etc out of his vocabulary and just have a freaking solid stance for once- if he does that i would expect him to get a jump in the polls, though at this point i have major doubts that it would have any chance of catching Bush's new ratings.

Its unrelated, but have any of you ever seen Tony Blair answer to parliament? Since he's a member he has to get up at least every week on *live tv* and full out argue with parliament members.. I've never watched it for very long- but its fascinating how different our systems are... kinda interesting to think about. Can you picture George Dubya going in front of congress or the senate and having all out, not-prepared-meticulously-ahead-of-time, debates on live tv? Kerry probably would do a bad job too, but Bush would be just funny (even you reps can admit that). Tony Blair is just brilliant.. its really cool.

he just looks brilliant when you stand him next to GW
i heard an really cool radio show on Air America where the person being interviewed had written a book (go figure) where he said the gaffs that W has are a pattern.
this pattern, he claimed, would repeat itself in a new blunder every time GW tried to talk about something he just didn't understand, like empathy, compassion, domestic troubles etc.
he went on to say that GW is almost poetic when discussing the death penalty, my way of the highway, we're gonna come get you Al Queda - type stuf...
I found it an very interesting insight.
they played the fool me once.. shame on you clip.. and he blunders at a key pont .. the "shame on me".. lol the author said it just is totally alien for GW to even say shame on me he couldn't get it out - and he wans't looking for a laugh
