There may be a thread on this already...but I don't care!
I was entertained. All of the characters were cool, and Johnny Depp always wins.
If I had to choose between his Wonka and Gene Wilder's, well...

Gotta go with the original on this one even though Roald Dahl hated it

I just saw this tonight, it certainly wasn't as good as the Wilder one and Wilder is a far better Willie Wonka. Depp just channelled Michael Jackson which wasn't really all that enjoyable given that Jackson's a paedo.
And what happened to the Everlasting Gobstopper storyline - was that not in the book? And the Charlie and Grandpa sipping the flying pop and thinking he'd lost. The best bits of the original went AWOL while copying the rest.

Eduin

like I stated in the previous thread about this:
the newer movie had a much better soundtrack, despite its lack of pure imagination.

Well, I didn't see any Michael Jackson. Depp's voice was a bit high and silly, but if you noticed he was actually repulsed by all of the kids except Charlie. Depp played Willy Wonka as if he were a person who's spent a few too many years alone in a chocolate factory...
That being said, I think I like Gene Wilder's version better.

Wilder was f*****g scary to me, he was chaotic and True chaos is scary shit.
With that being said, I will never pay to see a hollywood movie that is remaking a film that was good to begin with, you are just encouraging them to rehash old shit instead of being creative.
They want to remake shit, remake stuff that no one get s a chance to see anymore, like old John wayne flicks or Audie murphy, Dont remake contemporary classics.

i wish depp had worn a shirt that said something to the effect of Michael Jackson is my hero. then the movie would have been complete

I am tempted to go see this one, but I have the feeling it will rape my childhood memories of the first movie. :/

Can't compare it to the first one. It wasn't meant to be a remake, but more of a truer to the book than what the last one was.
Both are awesome movies in their own right. The original just took the book and turned it into a musical.
Depp claims he modeled the character after old tv children shows like Mr Rogers, and tried to mimic their "musical way of talking"

Doesn't really matter what most critics say. There only a handful I listen to (CHUD, Sickboy, etc..) and even then, I prefer to judge the movie myself =)

i'm just pointing out that the majority of people that are paid to review movies thought it was worthless.
take that for whatever it's worth.
i talked to my friend who is finishing up her masters degree in film and she sees just about every theatrical release. She fult that it was a neat idea, but the execution was quite poor.
sounds sorta like brave new world + gattaca + a little bit of every other sci fi movie ewer made.
bad performances totally ruin movies for me though.
Which is my reasoning for pointing out my hate for boondock saints EVERY time someone on realpoor makes a post about it. I think i ranted about this in the one before the most recent.
ahaha and i just checked rottentomatoes to make sure i wasnt sticking my foot in my mouth and it turns out i wasnt that far off.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/boondock_saints/
I think i'm going to start making short films a la www.youhavebadtasteinmusic.com
....
www.youhavebadtasteinmovies.com
it's gonna be great.
RESIST HOLLYWOOD. SUPPORT INDEPENDANT ART.
yay revolution.
Also.... everyone here should read "A year at the movies" by Kevin Murphy, one of the guys that did Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Brilliant book.

They were so different in nearly every way that it's near impossible for me to compare'em. So i just think of'em as 2 differnet movies that I liked.
