It rained here in L.A. for about 3 days straight. Around the third day my car was really a b***h to get started. It cranks but won't fire, I could get it going after a few cranks and after that it ran normally but now it won't turn over at all (just sits there and cranks starts to get going then dies). Checked the oil I am going to get some of that fuel enjector cleaner but you have t obe able to run the car for it to work. Any help would be appreciated going to google next:P

You have water in your distributor cap.

You might as well replace it since it shouldn't be getting water in it just from rain. It's probably cracked or something. While you're at it, replace the rotor too. It shouldn't be anymore than $20 and take more than 15 minutes... depending what kind of car you drive.

I would tend to agree with Owynn unless you have electric ignition in which case the chip may be wet. Also, you may want to check your fuel filters, depending on the car it could have 1 or 2.

FYI Next time someone asks for automobile help, please mention year/make/model. This way those of us with auto knowledge can rule out things like the traditional distributor cap and a carburator vs electrical ignition and fuel injection (I noticed you said you were going to buy injector cleaner so I am assuming you have fuel injectors).

It could just be a coincidence between the rain and the car. Usually when the injection system gets wet it stops working all together. You mentioned it was giving you trouble before it stopped completely. I would tend to think that this is something more than the water. Also, depending on your vehicle, unless you went through HUGE puddles or it sat in a puddle, there is no reason your ignition system should have water in it.

I would check the filters and the fuel lines. Make sure you are getting fuel up to the injectors. If not, it may be a fuel pump and you best pray to god it isn't inside your fuel tank like most of the new cars. that can cost some serious $$$

Edit: Assuming you can still get the car to crank somewhat ... What kind of smoke were you getting out the back? Black = fuel Blueish grey = oil This way you know somewhat where your problem lies.

Yeah sorry guys for the lack of info thanks a bunch for the help.

It's a 91 toyota MR2 non turbo I pulled the dist cap off before I left for work but I didn't have time to put it back on to check. Google told me it could have been either that or clogged fuel filter(s) as the quick fixes.

And yeah the starter is fine it just wont go from start sequence to idle. It usually starts up goes to about 1000rpm which is normal idle then slowly dies. Half a tank of gas in there so that's not the problem.

I was thinking cap/rotor but it could be plugs or plug wires. You can grab a water bottle with a spritz cap and mist the cap/rotor/wires by misting them and if it arcs then you know you have a problem there. Its a common issue with the coil pack on my model jetta. I had something similar happen though where it would crank and idle really low and then die, turned out to be a bad ignition switch which in my case was in the steering column ... 30 dollar fix if I had not been lazy and done it myself.. shop was about 300 ...

Is it manual? Because something might have fallen and gotten stuck on the floor by the clutch. Happened to my dad, something fell and the car would only crank when he pressed the clutch down.

That's how it's supposed to work. Thx neutral safety switch.

Plus if that were his problem it wouldn't even crank.

It's been a while since I've had a car with a distributer, but as I recall you can't always see if they're cracked. Pretty sure I remember having one or two that wouldn't start in wet weather because they had almost invisible hairline cracks in them.
