Can't run windows update or activate the cd key...

Anyone else had this problem? I did a reinstall of windows xp except now I can't run the updates or activate the CD key.
Activation stalls at "checking for internet connection"
Windows update will scan but hangs and eventually times out after clicking review and install updates.

I had that happen once when i changed motherboards... I had to call and wait forever to get it done:(
if you didn't reformat, you should do that and not just a reinstall.
