My camcorder appears to have died after its 5th use in a year. It was a DV cam and while I liked the cam and the quality of the picture, being limited to a 60-minute tape kind of sucked. iPods have 60-gig hard drives so I imagine having a camcorder capable of holding multiple gigs of video shouldn't be too hard, and TV-quality video clocks in around 500 MB/hour (at least in the torrents I've watched). So does anybody know of/have any experience with camcorders that record directly to file? Preferably something non-proprietary (MPEG) that I can play back in any device/PC?

To get those 500MB/1hour ratios, the compression programs have to optimize the entire movie. In other words, you can't really do that on the fly.
Still, 60 gigs of raw AVI + some existing software tricks should be able to fit at least 30+ minutes on a raw device.
I don't know.
